Over the next few weeks Yarkshire Gamer will be running a World Cup of Historical Miniatures Wargames Rules, everyone can get involved,

8 rules have been seeded to go straight into round 2

The voting will take place on the Yarkshire Gamer Facebook Page, I realise that it does exclude those on FB but the Preliminary Round had 2,700 votes so I need it to be manageable and one voting location does that.

Only one version of each rule set is eligible so, WRG Ancients is in as a single entry, not 1st Ed, 2nd Ed etc.

The Seeds are

1. In the Grand Manner
2. WRG Ancients
3. Fire and Fury
4. Chain of Command
5. Bruce Quarrie Napoleonics
6. Black Powder
7. Charles Grants Wargame
8.Rapid Fire

We could argue forever about what rules should be seeded and as its the first time I've done it, I picked the rules that I've seen have most influence from my perspective. I've only played 5 of them, I actively dislike 2 and only really played one, I even play alternatives with the same time period which are less popular, but you've got to start somewhere.

Many of these seem to be mor current rule sets. Too bad some of the older rules like The Sword and the Flame, Johnny Reb and others didn't make it.

Ditto. But a great idea nonetheless.

Wot no 'CHARGE!'???
Oh well, no FB, no comment… :o(

yarkshire gamer26 Jul 2023 3:48 p.m. PST

For those not of FB or Twitter the full results are on a blog post, and I'll up date that with future results, draws etc

It's only the voting that takes places on FB for reasons explained above, if your volunteering to count votes for me from multiple sources, let me know:-)

BillNM – Charge finished 50th out of 98 in the Preliminary Round

Grattan54 neither The Sword and the Flame got nominated, I am a big fan and still play JRII but no one voted for them.
Interested you say they are mostly modern sets as someone else accused me of being too old school with the seeds ! Lol

Hi James, hope your well mate, sadly Piquet didn't make the cut either ?

Cheers all

To be honest half of them I have never heard of, and the great ones are missing, like DBA and DBM, Barkers 1925 to 1950 so to me there's not much to consider.

yarkshire gamer31 Jul 2023 2:06 p.m. PST

UshCha

DBM was 31st and DBA 97th, 1925 – 1950 wasn't nominated.

Welcome to Game 4 of the World Cup of Historical Wargames Rules.

Today's match up sees General de Armee, Dave Brown's second set in the first round take on our second set from the Osprey Blue Books Series, Men Who Would be Kings, again two very different sets of rules.

General de Armee is a set of Big Battle Napoleonic rules. A more recent set than GdeB it saw the introduction of the ADC method of Command and Control sitting above the main rules. More streamlined but with a nod to old school these rules are just about to get a second incarnation.

Men Who Would be Kings is set in the Colonial Era and is a seeks to recreate the battles of the Indian Mutiny, Africa and beyond. The rules have a Hollywood style and troops are very much at the mercy of the quality of their officers and leaders. Perfect if you fancy getting a big Sean Connery tasche and going all Peachy.

Game 1 ends today with To the Strongest still well ahead of Saga. Game 2 is a right ding dong, the lead has changed hands so many times but Lion Rampant is ahead of General de Brigade at the moment. Game 3 saw Bolt Action ahead early doors but MeG has got a shifty on and is well out in front at the moment.

Thanks for joining in.
