It seems like every day is an international or national day of this or that. Who is in charge of approving these days? Do I just declare this is the international day of door knobs and poof it is? Is there a master list somewhere? How does this work? |

Basically someone who cares about something makes it happen. Apparently today is National Hot Fudge Day in the US, so I hope you are all enjoying your hot fudge in celebration. Dammit, I might have a sticky toffee pudding tonight as the closest "traditional" UK equivalent in celebration with my American chums :D Its funny, I remember a post similar to this a year or two back when the International Naval Wargames Day was announced. Maybe its going to be an annual occurrence? Today could be "International Why Is It An International Day Day"? :D |

I think the Congress votes to establish various national days here in the US. I suspect a lot of these are done to please manufacturers and voters in their states (the 27th is National Scotch Day, which probably makes distillers happy). Most of them are things almost everybody can get behind. If you Google holidays for a specific month, you should get a list. December has "Answer the phone like Buddy the Elf" day. State legislatures can also designate special days good for just their state. There are also religious holidays of various sorts: my birthday falls on the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. That is also Napoleon's birthday, which is a date treated with respect by those who collect Napoleonic armies. Grelber |

It's always a comfort to know that some legislature or body of Concerned citizens has so accomplished its real responsibilities that it has time for this sort of thing. I believe I'll play Tom Lehrer's "National Brotherhood Week" in tribute! YouTube link |

I'm just thankful that it doesn't last all year. |
