Hello everyone ,

The Highland Light Infantry in Crimea, the 71st, and the 74th wore it seems, a diced shako of bell-topped shape which had a curiously old-fashioned look for this war.

Does anyone have illustrations or photos showing the diced shako of bell-topped shape of the the 71st, and the 74th in crimea?

Thanks.

For the shako it's ok thank you Nick.

So the 71st and the 74th wore the infantry coatee not the highland infantry jacket like the kilted highlanders ?

It looks like both the kilted Highland and the Highland Light Infantry regiments wore the infantry coatee until the big uniform change in 1855 when they were given the double bested Highland doublet.

The standard infantry coatee did have longer tails than the Highland pattern. The 71st and 74th drew the short straw there, not having the folds of the kilt to keep their posteriors warm.
The retro 'bell-top' style caps were of blue felt rather than black and ORs of 71st had a red button atop the crown, a vestige of the original form of their Highland LI caps authorised in 1809.

Thank you both, please send me more color illustrations of the uniforms of these two regiments, thank you.

Look out for the Fosten brothers works, 'The Thin Red Line,' etc and Barthorp's 'Crimean Uniforms.'
