En Avant! To the barricades!

But they should never have taken away the regiments' names and left them with numbers. The metric system was bad enough, even without the Revolutionary calendar.

According to Yves Martin

14th July is NOT Bastille day.
This post, in English, just to dispel a common mistake which is to name the French national celebration as "Bastille day", thereby supposing it celebrates the storming of the Bastille on 14th July 1789.
Yes, indeed we can and should also probably commemorate that, BUT when the 14th July was instituted in 1880 as the French national celebration, it was actually to celebrate the 14th July 1790. A year after the Bastille events, national guards and deputies from all over France gathered on the field of Mars (where the Eiffel tower is nowadays) in a celebration of the "Federation". In effect commemorating that France was one nation, one people under one king. In 1880 this "bloodless" event was taken as a symbol to unite a country which was struggling out of a major defeat and had been debating whether to go back to the Monarchy or the Republic.
On 14th July 1880, the first military review was held on the Longchamp race track (and that site was to be used for that regularly afterwards) and the new 3rd republic flags were given to the regiments.

Well you do learn summat here every day. I always thought of 14th as Bastille Day.

Is this widely known in France?

So July 14th is the day we celebrate the falling of the Bastille but it's not Bastille Day.
I'm going to have a cognac and celebrate anyway

Le non-factoid,

So you are telling me that the 14th of July is not Rowntree's Pastille Day?

Brechtel19815 Jul 2023 3:34 a.m. PST

The usual, or common, term given to 14 July in English is Bastille Day. It is the National Day of France and in French it formally known as the Fete Nationale Francaise. Legally it is known as le 14 Juillet.

So, calling it Bastille Day is correct in English. It was first celebrated in 1790, a year after the storming and taking of the Bastille in Paris.

Had my normal but forgot yesterday French Toast this morning

von Winterfeldt16 Jul 2023 12:58 a.m. PST

this is what renowned historian Alexander Mikaberidze has to say

Bonne fête nationale, mes amis!
P.S. France's national holiday is not about the storming of the Bastille fortress on July 14, 1789, but rather the sense of national unity and freedom that was celebrated a year later at the remarkable Fête de la Fédération on July 14, 1790. Hence no need to wish anyone "Happy Bastille Day" 🙂

Was in Paris on the day, what a great day to be in France.

Impressive flypast from the French Air Force, saw some of the tanks and vehicles leaving, but the best bit for me was watching about 200 Republican Guard cavalry trooping past. Awesome day…

For The Wife, the best bit was Breakfast Wine courtesy of the Hotel… 🤭

@von Winterfeldt

The original Fête de la Fédération is the celebration of the one year anniversary of Bastille Day.

Thus, when they were reinstating Fête de la Fédération in 1880, it was also reinstating the celebration of Bastille Day by reference. The French understand Bastille Day. They just had a Bastille Day celebration in Central Park on 13th July and loads of French people managed to find their way there.

French toast in France is known as "Pain Perdu" and not considered by the French to be a national dish or even a Plat Préféré:
