Private Voices is the offspring of the Corpus of American Civil War Letters (CACWL) project, an effort to amass a large number of letters penned by individuals with limited educations who knew little about formal conventions of punctuation and capitalization.

"individuals with limited educations who knew little about formal conventions of punctuation and capitalization"

That would describe a lot of airmen and soldiers I knew in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Quite a number of them had four-year degrees.

Badly written – in terms of spelling, punctuation and grammar – pieces can often be very revealing of how ordinary people actually spoke and pronounced words. For example, the memoir of Bartlett Yancey Malone shows that he pronounced 'courthouse' as 'coathouse'.

The point I think is these are letters overlooked by Authors and Historians because they didn't sound eloquent enough. But some of these letters say much more than the words on paper.
