"individuals with limited educations who knew little about formal conventions of punctuation and capitalization" That would describe a lot of airmen and soldiers I knew in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Quite a number of them had four-year degrees. |

Badly written – in terms of spelling, punctuation and grammar – pieces can often be very revealing of how ordinary people actually spoke and pronounced words. For example, the memoir of Bartlett Yancey Malone shows that he pronounced 'courthouse' as 'coathouse'. |

The point I think is these are letters overlooked by Authors and Historians because they didn't sound eloquent enough. But some of these letters say much more than the words on paper. link |
