Great story and good for the landowner. I believe the horde would have devolved to the Crown/government if it had been unearthed in Britain or Canada. I hope, for the sake of property rights, that I'm incorrect – please educate me if I am. |

" I believe the horde would have devolved to the Crown/government" If the find is classed as 'treasure' the landowner and finder get paid its value in varying proportions (it is more complicated than that, but you get the idea). Otherwise you get to keep the original. There are special rules for items of low value but special cultural interest, so you can't just bulldoze those Roman mosaics…. |

a conflict archaeologist at Georgia Southern University who has heard about but not seen the hoard, told Live Science in an email that "given the time period and the location in Kentucky, which was neutral at the time, it is entirely possible this was buried in advance of Confederate John Hunt Morgan's June to July 1863 raid." Kentucky was NOT neutral in 1863, although it had been, briefly, in 1861. After General Polk invaded the state to take over a good defensive position at Columbus, on the Mississippi River, in early September of 1861, Kentucky was increasingly pro-Union. (The legislature even demanded that Polk remove himself and his troops.) |
