I have been re-basing Horse-holders for Dismounted Cavalry with the correct figures…. the Horse-holder REMAINS MOUNTED.
I don't know why figure manufacturers persist in getting this wrong!

SOURCES:
Cooke's Cavalry Tactics (1862) Prepare to fight – ON FOOT
ARTICLE FOURTH No.306

Dismount, except Nos.4, and form rank.
Nos. 4, who remain on horseback, have charge of the dismounted horses; a non-commissioned officer remains the with the dismounted horses to direct them.

POINSETT'S (1841) CAVALRY TACTICS
HORSE HOLDERS: The commander places a junior officer or NCO in charge of the horse holders, who remain mounted and have control of the linked horses.

It is a good question. So much information is available at your fingertips.

I was disappointed to see Warlord's Epic horseholders when they came out a few years ago. It was so easy to get it right, and a great opportunity with a new line of figures.

I think PP makes a proper set now.

Nice job on your horse holders, Larry.
It is possible that an illustration that I first saw in Battles and Leaders of the Civil War may have contributed to the misconception. It is in the Gettysburg segment, and appears in the section dealing with Buford's defense on July 1. It is a very nice illustration and has been reproduced elsewhere many times. It shows the horse holders dish mounted on the reverse slope for the ridge with Buford skirmish line on the top.

At least some people believe that those illustrations in B & L were based upon sketches made at the time. And there is the possibility that under certain circumstances the horse holders would dismount. However, they were supposed to be able to move the horses quickly if the situation required it. If there is gunfire and the horses are plunging around, climbing on one horse linked to three others would certainly be a difficult proposition.

Glad to see you're getting this right and letting other people know about it! A pet peeve of mine is CW supply wagons with the driver mounted on a seat instead of on a wheel horse.

Very nice work. If I have time I shall god back and correct mine.

I agree that some well known works if art probably contributed to the look. There may also be tactical considerations where it is not wise to remain mounted. But, overall, almost no manufacturer has modeled figures per regulation.

I really like the look of that.

In 28mm, we and Perry make mounted horse holders.

I stumbled upon mounted horse holders just last night. Blaze Away miniature line, available at Lancashire Games. I do 10mm.

Update: Those Blaze Aways are HUGE compared to my Old Glory, Perrin and even Pendraken 10mm. Can't use them…

That's correct horse holders were for the most part mounted. That's how it was done right up to the 1930s and early 40s.

I am glad to see this even if it means remounting a dozen or so stands from a standing rein holder to a mounted one, and the riderless horses in a row instead of a cluster behind the holder. Thanks for the post.
