I found this baffling at first as the suggestion seemed to be that the Allied had all the moral high ground. To a simple chap like me this meant they were the good guys and, whatever their belt buckle said, God was not with the other lot. Then I read "These psychological forces Clausewitz terms ‘moral forces' and include courage, morale, and the skill of the commander. The thesis then said these were the factors that won the Battle of the Bulge for the Allies. Personally, I think air superiority(once the sun came out), lack of supplies (esp POL), underestimation of the US fighting man and overwhelming Allied reinforcements did as much. It does start out as very hard going, but actually picked up later and is not a bad account of the campaign at all! |
