I red this 1897 novel by Michigan writer Stanley Waterloo to further my exploration of speculative paleo-fiction. I enjoyed for its own sake, but also as s companion to Jack London's Before Adam. Waterloo would later sue London for plagiarism. I was not convinced of this charge, though I'm sure that London would have read The Story of Ab. The Story of Ab is entertaining and imaginative and is fairly "accurate" when the knowledge of human prehistory in 1897 is taken into account. One of the more pathetic accusations against both novels were a modern professor claiming both as examples of Social Darwinism and Eugenics. Talk about "presentism!"

The novel has an interesting crypto-zoology creature-a great sea serpent I think there was a minor flap regarding sea serpents in the late 19th century, otherwise all animals are typical Ice Age fauna. Wolves, bears, big cats, boars, bison, mammoth, wild types of cattle make an appearance.
This is consistent with what is known concerning Ice Age Eurasia.

The mammoth hunt is a nice part of the novel. It remind me to continue my mammoth herd in 15mm. I recently won a nice Japanese capsule toy that looks great next to the models I have from Acheson.
