After scrambling to assemble a fighting force, the Marines Corps battled with characteristic élan in a conflict that had more than its share of ups and downs.

When the Korean War broke out my dad was a Marine recruiter for parts of northern California and Nevada. He had joined the Marine reserves in 1939 and was activated with the rest of his reserve company in 1940. He of course served in the Pacific. By 1950 he was a seasoned veteran of 10 years. You would think that he would at once be assigned to a line unit. Not so. Most of the recruiters were kept on the job in order to fill the ranks. My dad had a effective network set up, as did most recruiters. I remember him being gone for weeks at a time after the war started. Eventually he was sent to officer's school at Camp Pendleton and then shipped to Korea.
