What is the right order of the colors in the French cockade: blue in the middle, followed by white, and all ringed in red? Or blue in the middle, followed by red, and all ringed in white? I've seen it both ways in various plates and paintings. Thanks in advance.

Depends when – the original cockade was red and blue, with the white added by Lafayette – while it is most often shown with blue centre, then white middle and red outer stripe

That being said there is a French cockade from Waterloo at the Windsor & Borough Royal Museum that has a blue centre, red mid-section and white outer stripe

Most illustrations for the Empire period show a blue centre, followed by a red ring and finally a white outer ring.

The most logical is blue, white, red. (Inwards-outwards)The same as the french flag and also used up to today.
It is also the colours of Paris (red and blue) combined with the white of France

Thanks for the replies, and now it all makes so much more sense as to why you see both cockades! Since I am initially focused on the 1809 campaign, I will go in the future with the white on the outside.
