Peter Perla has written The Art of Wargaming: A Guide for Professionals and Hobbyists (published by The History of Wargaming Project) so I would dismiss his ideas so lightly.

Quite interesting, Armand, thank you ! Perhaps it is good to realize that this article is about professial wargames, not the kind we play.

arthur1815, I assume you meant "so I would NOT dismiss his ideas so lightly."

Dave Jackson, you are right! Careless typing error for which I apologise.

Renfield, if you read the article, you will see that when the author writes 'what wargaming is not' he is referring to the fact it is not a good predictor of outcomes for military planning purposes; he is not – other than by noting things that should be considered in designing a wargame – stating that any of the wargames we hobbyists play are not 'being done right'. Your final comment is just needlessly rude!

Seems to me the guy lost the plot. If you were war gaming logistics its about how to get what where, which is both highly technical and also about ways in which this simple accurate model may be interfered with. Experimentation as to where the logistics train can be best interrupted to get the most disruption to the delivery schedule is a case of war gaming where and what causes a disruption of the type required. This needs folk to be creative as to where what can be done to interrupt it. Chaos theory applies to all real world problems so no procedure is perfectly repeatable. Even the most accurate machine tool have a statistical spread of results though it is hopefully small.

On that basis its just a guy spouting off without understanding even basic simulation.
