I used to really love the Solomons Campaign aspect of WW2 in the Pacific until I read Islands of Destiny by John Prados, who also designed Avalon HIll's Third Reich and other games. That book pretty much ruined Pacific gaming for me! He lays out the story how the U.S. intelligence services got so good, so quickly that they knew which ships were coming down the Slot each night and when they would be transiting! The U.S. merely had to put forces out to meet them, which granted, didn't go so well the first few times! However, the operational advantages that this gave the U.S. going forward was huge and quickly imbalanced the outcome of the war.

"… and quickly imbalanced the outcome of the war."

And Thank God for it!

The Solomon's still make an outstanding wargames subject, but it was no GAME then.

Kind of like a typical IGYG board game with a gods eye view of everything.
