"the design of the original 40k space marines was taken directly from Judge Dredd/200AD comics."

Yes, that was my point.

"introduce a huge percentage of new people to the miniatures gaming hobby."

Meaning the Warhammer, or GW, hobby I'll assume.

"Never heard of Apple?"

Oh, I have. It was one of a pultry few examples already given above.

I guess exceptions are the rules these days?? Well, not to me.

"Was this a clear attempt by an evil corporation to trap students into the "cult" of Apple?

Nope, just a public relations outreach by a company that was receiving a tax deduction for these donations."

Please point out the difference?

"public relations"

There's the clue.

A sale could have worked also, but kids don't usually buy computers, so they would only be selling to the converted.

Donating equipment is a one-off activity that makes for good PR and provides equipment a school wouldn't otherwise be able to purchase and can use in the structured curriculum.

Supporting an extra-curricular activity – such as cycling club, chess club, Warhammer 40K club – widens the opportunities for students to try activities that they may not otherwise get involved in and that don't form a part of a structured curriculum. It also provides an additional social activity and offers the students a number of additional interests which may be life-enriching.

I anticipate your sarcastic side-swipe at the phrase "may be life-enriching" by proactively pointing out that clearly GW has given you a lot over the years, as you have demonstrated your deep affection for their product lines in your postings here.

GW providing free stuff to schools is a public relations effort (you can call it "marketing" if you like, since PR is a form of marketing), just as Apple providing free stuff to schools is.

Both companies have the hope/expectation that some of the students who are exposed to their products at school will become paying customers.

They are not the only companies to do so – many companies do PR/marketing through schools.

Almost every miniatures gamer I know who is under the age of sixty either started out in the miniatures gaming hobby with GW, or was introduced to the hobby by someone who was. GW is the top recruiter for the hobby as a whole – with many people moving to buy other minis and play other games wither instead of, or in addition to, GW products.

+1 there.

"a number of additional interests which may be life-enriching."

What are people trying to do to me? I'm nearly on the floor here!

" (you can call it "marketing" if you like, since PR is a form of marketing), just as Apple providing free stuff to schools is."

Round and Round the mulberry Bush…

Getting dizzy. Can we try a straight line, not just circles?

"GW is the top recruiter for the hobby as a whole"

If you mean the wargaming hobby, its just a shame they can't admit it.

But, yeah, rehash of rehash.

New material please.
