Can anybody explain the difference between these two rules sets by Bruce Weigle? I already own 1870, and I am curious as to what the difference is between the two sets if there is any. Thanks for any help!

1871 is a faster play set. Bruce made a decision to remove some of the very detailed play mechanics to give a faster game. Still just as good, just a bit smoother.

His own recommendation is that you use 1871 now, instead of the original sets. All the info, OOB and scenarios in the books are still just as useful, just use 1871 instead of the old rules. To facilitate you doing that he has created 1871-compatible qrs for each old rule set. You can download these from his website.

I've played both for quite some time. I strongly suggest using 1871 as it removes some of the more finicky aspects of 1870 while remaining a really good game to simulate large FPW battles.
