Interesting. A decent doctoral thesis could cover desertion rates between armies of a major war comparing numbers against conditions of recruitment and service. I'd suggest that the Napoleonic Wars would be best as there is probably the greatest divergence between combatants in both social attitudes in the countries concerned and recruiting and methods of discipline.
