Part 2 Infantry

Page 16 Add as a new paragraph before "The standard firearms ……."

"The Magdeburg Jaeger battalion was formed in June 1815 from the Russo-German Legion Jaeger company, Saxon Jaeger battalion and Saxon volunteer banners. It was not deployed in the Waterloo campaign. A Rhineland Schutzen battalion was also formed in October 1815 from the Berg Jaeger battalion and Nassau and Saxon light infantry." (Ref 1).

Page 26 Add before "The Uniforms of the Reserve Regiments"

"The Magdeburg Jaeger battalion uniform was the same as the East Prussian jaeger but the shoulder straps were yellow. The Rhineland Schutzen battalion uniform was the same as the Silesian schutzen but the shoulder straps were piped in poppy red." (Ref 1)

"Jaeger and schutzen did not usually wear the greatcoat across the body but kept it stowed on top of the pack. This , along with the waist belt, was to prevent their becoming entangled in bushes when skirmishing." (Ref 3).

Page 26 Add after "… Stammregiment's dress."

"The reservists were called up in late 1812 and early 1813 and formed into regional battalions associated with their parent regiment (stammregiment). There were also additional battalions raised in East Prussia by von Yorck (East Prussian Reserve and Lithuanian Fusilier Reserve Battalions). All these units also contained numbers of volunteers. The reserve battalions fought alongside the parent regiment.

In July 1813, 12 Reserve regiments (RIR), each of 3 battalions, were formed from these reserve battalions. The reserve regiment usually had the same regimental number as the stammregiment i.e. IR1 was the stammregiment for RIR1 and the battalions were, with a few exceptions, from the same region as the stammregiment. The exceptions were the 3rd battalion RIR12 which had IR4 as the stammregiment and 2nd battalion 6RIR which had IR11." (Ref 1)

Some general comments on the Reserve-Infanterie-Regiments to be added after the first paragraph on page 27.

"The regiments were brought into the line numbering in March 1815 but were only given territorial titles in 1816. For example, the Erstes Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment became the Infanterie Regiment 13 in March 1815 and IR 13 (1es Westfalisches) in 1816. However, some regiments had already moved their bases to the new recruitment areas in 1814 and were in the process of replacing their stammregiment facings with those of the new area. For example, by June 1815, some of the IR18 had removed the red collars and cuffs of West Prussia but had not yet received the new pink material for Westphalia, their new area." (Ref 4)

"The regiments equipped by Britain with blue tunics with lace across the front had usually removed the lace by late summer 1813 to make the uniform look more Prussian. The shako plumes were also often removed."

Page 27 After the title "Nr 12 Brandenburgisches………Regiment"

"As described earlier, the 12th Regiment was created in July 1813 when the Garde zu Fuss were removed from the line. The 1&2 Reserve battalions of the IR9 (Leib) became the 1 and 2 and Battalions IR12 and the 3rd Reserve battalion IR6 became the 3rd Fusilier battalion."

Page 28 Add to first paragraph
"By 1815, some of the men were wearing regulation uniforms with the appropriate white or black belts."

Page 28 I Battalion. Add at the end.

"Drummers wore British style white lace on their sleeves i.e. 7 upward pointing chevrons and on the seams." Ref 1

Page 30 Add before last paragraph

"By 1815, most wore the regulation uniform with pink facings although some still had the old crimson and yellow. This unit suffered the most casualties of any Prussian unit at Waterloo. " Ref 1

Page 30 Add to last paragraph

"As pink was the colour of their new recruiting area (Westphalia), this story seems unlikely."

Page 31 Add after"…..black Prussian Cockade."
"By 1815, most of the regiment had received regulation uniforms." Ref 1

(E) Freikorps and Foreign Units

"The various Freikorps and Foreign units were brought into the line in March 1815 as IR 25 to 31 (ref 1). They were formed as follows:

25th from the infantry of von Lutzow's Freikorps and 3th and 10th Ersatz battalions
26th from the Elbe Infantry Regiment
27th from the infantry of the Hellwigsche Streifkorps, Elbe Reserve Battalion and Silesian Ersatz (Reserve)battalion
28th and 29th from the former Duchy of Berg Infantry regiments 1 and 2 and the Berg Grenadier battalion
30th and 31st from the Russo-German Legion Infantry brigades

The 32nd Regiment was formed from militia from the Elbe, Westphalian and Saxony areas in late 1815. (Ref 1)

The history and uniforms are covered in more detail in Part 5."
