Sometimes. Maybe mostly.

Rich Bliss30 May 2023 1:01 p.m. PST

Yes, I do. Mattress foam cut to shape and shoved underneath the cloth.

Milgame30 May 2023 1:07 p.m. PST

Yes. Various methods for both on a flat tabletop and under a ground cloth/mat.

MajorB30 May 2023 1:13 p.m. PST

Yes. Easiest scenery for me to make. :-)

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP30 May 2023 1:32 p.m. PST

No, buy commercial terrain or have a buddy make one for me – he has a bunch of gear that makes it easy to make hills

I bought mine long ago & still use them.

Grelber30 May 2023 3:34 p.m. PST

A bit of both: I have some nice hills I purchased, but I have also made some hills.

Why yes, I do make my own.

Personal logo ColCampbell Supporting Member of TMP30 May 2023 5:29 p.m. PST

Yes, I do. Although I have one set I purchased a while ago, I have many more that I've built myself out of insulation grade foam board.

Greylegion30 May 2023 5:42 p.m. PST

Yes. Pretty easy to pull off.

myxemail30 May 2023 5:47 p.m. PST

Yes, I do.
I prefer my style of hills to the commercial ones. Any commercial hill that came close to those that I crafted, are very expensive

Gonsalvo30 May 2023 5:58 p.m. PST

I've made my own, including custom sets for Eylau and Wagram, and I've bought a number of commercial ones. No regrets about any of them; thay all get used!

rustymusket30 May 2023 6:15 p.m. PST

Have bought in past. Lately make my own, simple stepped hills.

smithsco30 May 2023 6:30 p.m. PST

Yes. Something about homemade hills that makes wargaming have the right feel

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP30 May 2023 6:37 p.m. PST

You know, the more I think about it, the worse (or at least the more complicated) it gets.
I've built my own.
I've purchased commercial hills new.
I've purchased commercial hills used in flea markets.
I've purchased other people's hand-made hills in flea markets.

Lots of them have been repaired after games or because I bought them damaged, and a fair percentage have been modified--repainted, reflocked, or had felt added to the base.

Best I can say for myself is that the set for any specified scale and climate usually blend pretty well.

I have more hills and ridges then any other terrain items. Most of them have been made by me, although a few (definitely not many) have been purchased along the way.

So … Yes, and I also buy.

And a digression …

Made a custom set for the hills and ridges for west of Gettysburg.

Have made a custom set for the Merida area/table of a Snappy Nappy Campaign-in-a-Day done on the Talavera campaign in Spain (plus a pair of half ridges for the Alcazar de San Juan area/table).

Another set has been accumulating, and still in progress, for various battlefields of the 1812 Russian Campaign.

Made a full set of all the hills/ridges to match all the scenarios provided in the Lasalle 2nd Edition rules.

Have a smattering of various other hills and ridges thta have been made as well.

I have made some but bought more. If I see a hill I like I will get it. If I can't find what I need, then I make it.

I bought some really nice hills from "The Scene". They have outcrops of little rocks. Very nice. They made a lot of custom ones/sizes for me. They also made some with holes for trees in them too. Very good hills.
Excellent for travelling as they are tough and easy to stack.

I Buy and make.

For 1/144 I use Kalistra hex hills 2 high standard. These are ideal for 1/144 as there volume use is not excessive.

For 1/72 I use Fold Flat hills simply as the space needed even for a small hill it beyond my storage capability. In addition I am more than happy to compromise artistry for a modular system so I get closer to what I want and not limited be by what I have. Plus the sharp crest lime makes it easy to define for both sides, what is on the edge and what is set back. Same as for Kalistra hex at the smaller scale. And of course you get a storage volume to hill ratio, at least 30 times less storage space for each hill. But not for Warpainters, its for playing not ogling at the models.

I don't have lots of photos I'm not into that but this shows the hills.

Old school so of course I make my own.

COL Scott ret31 May 2023 9:36 p.m. PST

Yes I do.

I used to do them Grant style, like contour lines.

Now they are shallower with sloped sides but a flat top. I do pot some thing to denote the crest.

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP31 May 2023 9:39 p.m. PST

Yes, mostly out of soft foam.

Martin Rapier31 May 2023 11:50 p.m. PST

Yes. Never bought a hill terrain piece in my life.

Captain Pete02 Jun 2023 9:40 a.m. PST

Yes. My hills are part of my GHQ Terrain Maker.

CeruLucifus06 Jun 2023 9:23 p.m. PST

Yes. The ones I've bought never fit in my storage solutions. The ones I make fit whatever size constraint I plan them for.

Rod MacArthur08 Jun 2023 9:02 a.m. PST

Yes, using my modular system here:
