On a scale of 0 (no problem) to 10 (crisis), how would you rate your cat(s) in terms of causing problems for your miniature wargaming hobby?

I would say 0 because she provides company especially when I am doing some dull task that needs her "supervision".

Old cat was a 1 or 2, only because she would often insist on getting on my lap when I was painting.
New cats are 0 but for one of them I think it is because she hasn't discovered the potential in the painting room or knocking things off the table. She does this elsewhere so probably only a matter of time.

Zero, I have no pets and don't want any. I like dogs, simply do not want to take care of them.

A 1 or a 2 for the painting table.
About the a 5 when playing a game. The cats will be inquisitive and jump up a few times, until their curiosity has been fulfilled

Display problem – 3. My display shelf has cardboard blockers around the bottom to keep the cat from messing with the minis. This distracts from the esthetic appeal a bit.

Pebbles is a '0'. But about 15 years ago there was a "cat·tastrophe"…..

Only once…

My cat – 1, he is no trouble at all, usually sleeps in my wargames room, occasioanlly on the table but knows when to shift if a game is on.

My daughter's cat? 10 – trashed the painting table the other week

If "0" is "my cat is not a problem," what is "I don't have a cat?" -∞?

Bashytubits17 May 2023 6:47 a.m. PST

Problems were meant to be solved, by Cats!!!!!

P.S. My cat has never messed with my wargaming stuff, just every single other thing.

My cat seems largely indifferent to my wargame figures and scenery – because they're not edible! He did once disable several functions on my computer by walking across the keyboard while it was switched on, and he sometimes distracts me from reading military history or writing rules by sitting on my lap and demanding that I focus on him. So, usually 0 but occasionally 2.

Depends on the cat. I've known cats who were little or no problem, and cats which made miniature warfare absolutely impossible. Seems to be mostly a matter of how willing they are to climb onto a table.

I had one that loved to play with my dice while I was on a Zoom game during the pandemic. And lay in the box lid I was using to roll the dice. So maybe 5. While working on minis, more of an 1 or 2.

HMS Exeter17 May 2023 8:37 a.m. PST

With miniatures gaming 0. But, I could never leave a board game set up unattended as she loved chewing counters.

14Bore17 May 2023 9:10 a.m. PST

Their gone now, but war gaming wasn't a issue as I play in my outbuilding, but painting was another matter, drinking my brush water so had to get a lid, walking all over my table and wanting lap time.
I miss them.

No cat, no problem

Personal logo Herkybird Supporting Member of TMP17 May 2023 10:32 a.m. PST

I used to have cats, and I miss the problem of having to stop doing wargamey things to feed said ravenous eating machine.
My favourite cat was also keen on sitting on my lap, thus stopping me paint etc, she also liked to play with my paintbrush…

I miss them!

When we had cats (2) they were fine and caused me no wargaming problems.

when they died we voted and now have a house rabbit a white one called Alaska.

his problem is chewing things and I have had a couple of my wargames books nibbled = nothing serious just the edges of the covers now have a serrated edge.

I had a cat that would jump on the game table. She was small and light so it just picked her up and set her on the ground. She was a great pet and is greatly missed.

The cat I have now is really big. The only problem when gaming is she likes to be under everyone's feet, then last Saturday during a game I stepped on one of her paws. No damage to either of us. So a 1.

When painting I have to close the door because she wants to get on my desk and get in the middle of everything. Although a short hair she sheds fur and that can be a problem while painting.

Current ones are about 2. One wanders round the tables wanting cuddles from all. One sits and watches the game intently and occasionally steals a tree. On steals figures off the shelves; had to attach Perspex sheets to foil her.

We have 3 cats. The oldest is no problem so a 0. The other two are younger and at the same age, but have way different personalities. One likes to push stuff off counters and tables. He also chews plastic wrap. The other likes to claim any open horizontal area in my gaming & painting area & is not adverse to pushing stuff aside to make room. Plus he loves to chew cardboard and balsa wood. I rate both of them as a 4 or 5.

I haven't had a game at my house since Covid. All games have been in gaming stores or at a convention. The only way I can leave a game set up, either board or miniature, is by closing a door and then having to endure the scratching, thumping, and meowing of 2 cats who just know I'm doing something they have to supervise.

Col Durnford Supporting Member of TMP17 May 2023 6:21 p.m. PST

One cat no real problem. I have old report distribution shelves that are just the right size to hold beer flats with my figures. The cat just had to reach in and see what he could pull out. I needed to place framed maps in front and problem went away. Another time he was playing with dice on my dice table. My wife got a chuckle out of me saying "Those are my dice, leave them alone".

I also have had him sit on one of the bar stools around the gaming table just watching the action. He does know what "Get off the table" means.

All things considered I would rate him about a 1. Well worth the trade off for the joy the little B****** brings.

Possible source for new brushes? :)

The cat pounced from a high-up bookshelf to attack rolling dice on the table. I was mildly put off, but picked him up, placed him on the floor, and started rearranging the terrain. My opponent was apoplectic. We finished the game, he left, and I never had to play against him again. What should have been maybe a '3' incident turned into a 0 due to him sussing out a poor gaming opponent.
Side note, every few months, my cat would shed a whisker. They made great aerials for 1/35 vehicles.

Ed Mohrmann19 May 2023 5:54 p.m. PST

four cats no problem.

Back when I had a sandtable, though…

M1Fanboy22 May 2023 6:30 a.m. PST

I have 2 cats, I'd rate them 0s. Brother and sister, all black shorthairs. They were rescues, and if I hadn't they would have wound up barn cats, which wasn't happening on my watch. We've had them both to our massive joy and pleasure for the last 7 years.

The girl is more interested in getting attention from me. She will just jump up wherever I am and demand to be petted, loudly. It's taught me to paint one-handed, but this isn't a biggie. She used to knock things off of tables, but she doesn't do that as much anymore. She has a knack for occasionally sitting on the table when a game is set up but out of the way. I think she really likes to spectate. She once observed an entire Battlegroup game without so much as a meow. Just quietly sat there taking it all in (Plus, she's at most 5-6lbs, so she's not going to be too much weight for a table).

The boy is so afraid of everything, he's never messed with my wargaming stuff. Sad really. He's gotten more personable in the seven years we've had him, but honestly, he is still very skittish but affectionate on his terms. But when gamers are over? He vanishes.

Now my dog on the other hand, if it's on the floor, it winds up in his mouth. He's scared of everything (and growls at everyone, then barks loudly at a high pitch) when we have any sort of person come to the door, and loses his mind when I get up from a chair! He's more the wargaming impediment than the cats ever dreamed of being.

No cat – No Problem.

I had individually mounted plastic figures on plastic bases. They were pro-painted figures, very nice. I had them in formation on my work table. I walked into my hobby room and noticed one was missing.

Through the door, I saw my cat with the base in her mouth with the figure attached. She would occasionally drop and bat it around the floor. I went to get it from her and she would pick it up and run with it. I finally had to put some food in her bowl to distract her long enough to retrieve it. Fortunately no tooth marks and no damage. That door remains shut now.

On that occasion at least an 8 if not a 9. Had she chewed it up, a 10.
