Hi all, I have an itch to play Avalon Hill's Jutland, with miniatures. Probably 1:4800 or 1:6000 is the way to go? Can anyone recommend a manufacturer? It would be great if there are Jutland fleet packs. I would prefer a US manufacturer due to shipping costs.

I imagine this is a fairly common goal in the ship gaming community, so I would appreciate your sage wisdom!

In 1/4800 XPForge (xpforge.com) and Shapeways (shapeways.com) are the best bets. You might ask Tim at xpforge as to planned releases for the Germans as I believe they have just started WW1 fleets with the Brits.

In 1/6000 the Figurehead range is complete and even has a specific Jutland box all in one package. Last Square is the producer at lastsquare.com.

Given Jutland is primarily a BB/BC fight, the model size vs range on the table may make 1/6000 a bit visually sensible whereas the 1/4800 are a bit more visually identifiable at table height.

Navwar in the UK also makes everything needed in 1/3000.

Last Square carrying the Figurehead line that, I believe, do come in packs for Jutland. They would be in the scale you like. I have a bunch and they are great figures. Plus, can tell you Last Square is a good business that you can trust.

The 1:6000 scale ships fit very well of the AH Jutland cardboard counters. The owner used the old Regal Miniatures ships but Figurehead should work just as well.

Here are a couple of games our group did way back when using them.

Life is nothing but trade offs.

As regards Jutland Fleet packs. Figurehead's 1/6000 has a pack for each side, but the combined cost is $488. USD Last Square has free shipping on orders over $150. USD I don't know how many models total.

Navwar in the UK has a Jutland Fleet pack for both sides with 250 total models at 1/3000 scale. HMS Iron Duke being about 2,5". With international shipping that's $279. USD

To order from Navwar you have to submit an order form, which might require some techno problem solving, and sending CCinfo via email. If it was me I'd print out the form, fill it out, scan it into an email attachment and send it with the cc info in 2 separate emails.

Navwar is rather militantly determined to roll old school, but their rep on shipping speed is exemplary.

Hoping this helps.

HMS Ex – Navwar doesn't have an e-mail address, it would be post, phone (for 2 hours on a Saturday ?) or nothing.

Great service in the UK, often quicker than stuff ordered from tech savvy firms, but not so easy internationally.

Ugh

People have been saying "Ugh" or similar about Navwar's trading methods for decades. Yet still they carry on, so someone besides me is buying his products.

He doesn't care about the naysayers, and as you say, his turnaround times are amazing.

If you can cope with the lack of an option
to order by email, Navwar is great to deal with, in the UK at least, and the range is extensive (you'll get all you need for Jutland). Despite collecting the fleets myself I am inclined to think that 1/3000 is just too big for Jutland, at least at 1-to-1. It depends how important it is to you that formations should occupy a realistic space relative to gunnery ranges. For me the most elegant solution is Paul Hague's one of having one model per two capital ships. (I am not sure he has the "ground" scale quite right but it would be easy to adjust it.) Or you could do 1/6000, but they are *very* small and pretty expensive.

Thank you all so much for your speedy, detailed replies! Despite the hurdles that the company seems to place on itself, I might go with Navwar. They look great, and even with the shipping (40%!!!) they seem to be the value. I can live with 1:3000, they look so nice.

I've wargamed the whole or part of Jutland a dozen times now, and played out the battle four times in a week back in 2016 for the centenary, using 1/3000 models in two games and 1/6000 in another. If I was starting from scratch I'd go for 1/6000 despite the extra expense (it was unfortunate that Figurehead sold out to a US firm back in the 2000s, all the prices went up considerably), but the 1/3000 games looked grand

This is heresy. I'd get the Jutland board game. It has all of the ships in about 1:6000 scale, colored and with their names. It will save you hundreds of dollars and hours of painting – unless you really want to do that.

I've done it with the game, planned to do it with 1/1250 and did do it for the centenary with 1/2400. My suggestion is the 1/4800 or 1/6000 for sanity. Have fun, I always did!

Speculus18 May 2023 6:23 p.m. PST

1. I have the Jutland board game and think it's great
2. I DO like to paint and collect miniatures
3. This is "The Miniatures Page", so someone wanting to do miniatures ships shouldn't be branded a heretic

barcah200120 May 2023 7:49 p.m. PST

Wolfgang, what size are the Avalanche Jutland ship counters? Same as AH's?

Wolfhag Supporting Member of TMP22 May 2023 5:51 a.m. PST

Speculus,
Sorry, I meant my statement was heresy because it advised not using miniatures.

Yes, they are about the same size but much better looking.

Thanks Wolfgang, asked Avalanchepress if I could buy counters
