This post yesterday TMP link about Sword and Spear got me thinking about the Fantasy version, and how it differs from the historical game. I presume the difference mostly relates to the treatment of heroes, magic and monsters.

I quite like S&S historical but have not seen or played the fantasy version – does anyone know how it treats the fantasy parts and whether it makes for a good game? I am potentially interested in using it for Middle Earth mass battles.

I have mostly played the fantasy version of the game and might say it plays very similar but obviously also include several new types of elements not present in the ancient rules.

On important part it "Magic", this means you can do things like hand out bonus dice to units, even if the don't have Impetus or it can protect units attacked by ranged units and so on.
This means you can use magic to either blunt an attack or strengthen an assault in a specific part of the line in a flexible way you can't do in the ancient rules.
But magic is not all powerful but rather a tactical tool so much in line with the overall design of the game.

Things like large monsters and heroes also exist but they are not as much all powerful units as they are dynamic tools in the toolbox.

You then also have more exotic things like beast, swarm and large beast units with their own set of benefits and drawbacks.

There also are more abilities you can give units with more of a fantasy feel, such as regeneration, frenzy, magical attacks, poison attacks and undead units etc… and don't forget flying units.

Overall there just are more diversity in unit and army design.

How you use the magic, unit types and abilities in your fantasy environment should depend on the setting. I say it could fit into pretty much any fantasy setting quite easily.
