Have long admired their extensive range but a bit worried about quality. For example they do a nice M8 Scott but the picture shows the model with extensive amounts of "donuts" marring the surface. Anyone have any experience with their 12mm range and comment on quality and if in fact these "donuts" do in fact show up?

Good question. I've wondered the same thing myself on their 1/144th vehicles.

Going from the photos on their website they are very roughly printed, with many raised lines everywhere. Might be ok for war gaming but not for collectors. Must be a horror show to paint them up decently. An old review from the web.

I have ordered 12mm British WWII Universal Carriers from Butler. Sorry to say that his printers do not do a good job at this scale.

Now this was a few years ago so things may be better now.

He has mentioned offering resin prints, too, so maybe that would be the way to go, if true.

Fast service though!

These are FDM prints and are not designed for detail printing at such a small scale. I have noticed that resin prints are offered for most items and that is what you would want to purchase if you want fine detail.

BPM offers two materials ("PLA" and "high resolution resin"). Most of the pictures show the lower-resolution PLA material with flaws and print lines. The on-line scuttlebutt was that the resin prints were much better, so I ordered a selection of 12mm vehicles to see for myself. Some impressions:

The resin prints do indeed look much better than the photos of the rough and staircased prints all over the web site.

All the models have good proportions, and are instantly recognizable. None have the tree-trunk barrels common in this scale.

The details look good. As usual with small models, rivets are oversized, handrails are too flat, plates and hatches stand out too much (too thick), seams are too wide, etc. But this is how they remain visible and paintable and durable, so I have no objections. I think the STL designer did a great job, and I agree with the decisions. I have nothing to say about the accuracy of such details; I'll leave that evaluation to others, and you should be able to see them in the web site photos if you're concerned about that.

All of the models have print lines. They are mostly very light (except the deeply corduroyed undersides, where nobody will see them). They may be light enough to go unnoticed at wargaming distances with brush-on paint jobs, but I worry they may be deep enough to ruin washes and maybe drybrushing, which will matter on the the monochrome desert tanks and Russian tanks I want. I won't know until I try painting them in a few months.

The models vary in quality.

I like everything about the Hummel except the gun shield. The raised surfaces on either side of the gun embrasure are stepped so badly they look like louvers. I don't think I can fix that. I am uncertain if I should buy more of these.

I desperately hope I can make the T-34/85 look good under paint. It has beautiful proportions, the hull is a single durable piece, the turret is nearly free of print lines and fits tightly in its hole, rotating without play. Unfortunately, the front and rear hull slopes and top of hull have a lot of print lines.

I ordered the Koenigsberg gun in 12mm about 6 months ago. Ordered his better quality resin. It is perfect with no defects at all.

Older productions had quite a bit of 'Lines'… newer less. A lot depends on scale that you are going for.
Thing is, Paint and addition of Stowage items and Camo mean pretty good for gaming… just not 'exhibition'models.
I LIKE Butler's… and have had Great Service, in UK.

I've ordered 15mm stuff using the high resolution resin. the quality was excellent with no visible lines.

I guess there would be a minor change to 12mm but the rest should be the same

I've had 20mm, but they were not good to paint..

I do wonder how good they are now, especially in the resin..

I bought a small number of early Cold War resin prints in 1:144. Couldn't fault them quality wise, but I'm no rivet counter.

I ordered 1/200!in higher quality resin .
Bren carriers , L6 Italian light tanks , 25prds , 37mm , 88mm, 2prd , trucks etc
They are superior to any metal versions
