The USMC is part of the USN and AFAIK they all fall under the Pentagon's plan…

The Marine Corps is not part of the US Navy. It is a separate service with its own service chief (The Commandant of the Marine Corps) who sits on the joint chiefs of staff with the equivalent rank of four-star general. Both services, being naval services, fall under the Secretary of the Navy.

As far as I know, no Marine Corps base was named for a Confederate general. So the point is moot. Marine Corps bases are either camps or air stations.

The acronym Marine stands for:

My Ass Really Is Navy Equipment

:-)

Striker14 May 2023 11:38 p.m. PST

I generally don't think all the CVNs should be named after POTUS's.

They should at least have navy battles, keep the names from original USN ships, past carriers (Enterprise for example), cities, states. If it has to be a person at least use a USN person in some respect. Presidents are people = some flaw. Once presidents start up it becomes "well what about my guy?" and "if they get that we get this" games.

Brechtel19815 May 2023 3:49 a.m. PST

The term/title Marine is not an acronym…

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian15 May 2023 4:29 a.m. PST

It was a joke.

Brechtel19815 May 2023 4:44 a.m. PST

It isn't funny.

Heedless Horseman15 May 2023 4:56 a.m. PST

I rather Doubt that there will be another H.M.S Hood… but for a diferent reason. I think there should be… for honour of service.

doc mcb15 May 2023 6:15 a.m. PST

If the USMC isn't part of the Navy, why don't they -- a combat branch -- have their own medics? Why depend on Navy Corpsmen?

Brechtel19815 May 2023 7:13 a.m. PST

That's the way the system is set up. The Marine Corps has Navy Chaplains also. The US Navy also buys Marine Corps aircraft.

Perhaps a little research on the subject might help you understand.

All of the armed forces are 'combat branches' with the possible exception of the unnecessary 'space force.'

Did you take a look at the links I posted? The Marine Corps being a separate service is codified in law, the latest being the National Security Act of 1947. After War II the US Army tried to have the Marine Corps abolished, and they obviously failed.

Did you actually believe that the Marine Corps was not a separate service? I find that incredible…

Hmmm … everything I knew the USMC was part of the USN … And I'm a grad of Basic Amph Training at Little Creek NAB, Norfolk in '82, IIRC … old fart

Both services, being naval services, fall under the Secretary of the Navy.
That is how that's I understood it.

As far as I know, no Marine Corps base was named for a Confederate general. So the point is moot. Marine Corps bases are either camps or air stations.
I couldn't remember any USMC base being named after a CSA GEN.

After War II the US Army tried to have the Marine Corps abolished, and they obviously failed.
That would have been a bad decision, IMO … Albeit the US Army did more Amph Ops in WWII than the USMC. But the USMC only had 6 Divs + a few small separate units. The US Army had close to 100 or more IIRC. So size does matter …

All of the armed forces are 'combat branches'
Hence being called the "Armed Forces".
with the possible exception of the unnecessary 'space force.'
Totally disagree with you, but that is not rare. The USSF is doing a number of missions, etc., that the USAF, etc. does not have to do any longer. The USSF does a lot of Classified ops, AFAIK. As a member of the Military Officers' Assoc of America, we had an unclassified briefing on the new branch. It does have a mission.

Of course, the USAF was part of the US Army until 1947.

Brechtel198 did you serve with the USMC or USN ?

doc mcb15 May 2023 9:09 a.m. PST

You left out NAIS.

Kevin, I think we are mostly funning you.

It is really just semantics.

doc mcb15 May 2023 10:17 a.m. PST

I mean of course NCIS. NAIS is the independent school association.

Brechtel19815 May 2023 10:50 a.m. PST

Brechtel198 did you serve with the USMC or USN ?

I'm a retired Marine. My Dad was a navy officer and commanded an attack transport in War II. My two brothers served in the US Army and the Marine Corps. Two of us are West Point graduates. My son is thinking of flying for either the Navy or the Marine Corps.

Brechtel19815 May 2023 10:51 a.m. PST

It is really just semantics.

No, it isn't. I guess you had to be there. 😁

NCIS is a federal criminal investigation service and works for the Department of the Navy.

Brechtel19815 May 2023 12:11 p.m. PST

More on the NCIS:

And a TV Show! 😄

doc mcb15 May 2023 1:40 p.m. PST

And another of the many ways the Marines are integrated into the Navy.

Brechtel19815 May 2023 4:40 p.m. PST

How so?

The Marine Corps is not 'integrated into the Navy.' Again, the Marine Corps is a separate service. The Commandant of the Marine Corps and the Chief of Naval Operations are the respective service chiefs under the Secretary of the Navy.

It is a very simple concept.

As for NCIS:

'Within the Department of the Navy, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service is the civilian federal law enforcement agency uniquely responsible for investigating felony crime, preventing terrorism and protecting secrets for the Navy and Marine Corps.'

Good to know ! Thank you and your family for your/their service … Wish your son good luck if he joins up !

FWIW – I believe we need both the US Army & USMC. Plus, the other services as well of course.

I worked and trained with the USMC a number of times when I was on Active Duty.

*A bit OT but … Brechtel… saw this on Military.com today. About the USSF … You may find it interesting. And you may be right about the USSF ? However, I'm still an advocate for it.

Brechtel19816 May 2023 9:13 a.m. PST

I'm not impressed with the creation of a branch of the service that was already being done by the Air Force. The Air Force has a short tip of the spear to begin with, the space force doesn't appear to have any spear at all.

And their uniforms are ridiculous as is their logo. Star Trek anyone?

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP16 May 2023 5:52 p.m. PST

Well of course I respect your opinion as a fellow Vet. Plus, you have a very good military "resume' ". I can say clearly better than mine.

But I still think USSF will be useful. So we can agree to disagree … No harm no foul.

Yes, their dress uniform is very "futuristic" and their logo is very Star Trek-ish. However, I am a Star Trek and Sci-fi fan… so …

So we will have to see how the USSF does as time goes on … or not …

dBerczerk17 May 2023 5:26 p.m. PST

Better to have a United States Space Force and not need it than to need a Space Force and not have it.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP17 May 2023 6:06 p.m. PST

I agree with that !

Brechtel19817 May 2023 6:50 p.m. PST

Better to have a United States Space Force and not need it than to need a Space Force and not have it.

It was already in existence. It was called Space Command. There was no need to make Space Command a separate service. It does little but add yet another layer of bureaucracy to the armed forces and it is a small service with an odd uniform. Seems to me it is nothing more than an egocentric move by an egoticstical and self-centered former president. In short, it is both unnecessary and quite stupid.

dBerczerk18 May 2023 5:41 a.m. PST

Brechtel198 -- thank you for clarifying the real reason you disparage the U.S. Space Force.

Brechtel19818 May 2023 6:29 a.m. PST

The 'real reason' is that the 'new' organization is not necessary and is redundant.

dBerczerk18 May 2023 10:06 a.m. PST

Thank you for your "opinion."

Brechtel19818 May 2023 11:43 a.m. PST

You're very welcome.

Perhaps you could make an attempt to justify your support for a separate Space Force that would make it superior to the previous Space Command?

dBerczerk18 May 2023 12:29 p.m. PST

Brechtel198 -- I'll leave that up to the People's Liberation Army of the Communist Party of China.

Brechtel19818 May 2023 12:54 p.m. PST

Incredible…

dBerczerk18 May 2023 6:14 p.m. PST

You are most kind.

Brechtel19819 May 2023 6:31 a.m. PST

It wasn't a compliment. If you've seen the musical '1776' the character playing John Adams used the term sarcastically when another of the delegates said something ridiculous.

To help you, here's two definitions of the word 'incredible':

1. impossible to believe.

2. difficult to believe; extraordinary.

Hopefully, this will help you in your future endeavors…

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP19 May 2023 7:24 a.m. PST

"Incredible !!!" 😱😧🤯

dBerczerk19 May 2023 8:06 a.m. PST

So then, it is safe to say your disdain for the former President of the United States of America is "incredible."

And again, thank you for all your help, and interest in my future endeavors.

"Ironically, many of the honored Confederates who weren't even good generals."
I guess the definition of a good general depends on how much you win, odds be damned.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP21 Jul 2023 9:28 a.m. PST

Indeed …

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP12 Aug 2023 8:31 a.m. PST

From Military.com

Will they start digging up the CSA dead next ?

As many know I don't support slavery, KKK, etc. at all. It is heinous, horrible, etc., to say the least.

However, more erasing of our history, the good, the bad, the ugly and the very ugly is Orwellian, IMO

We can't forget our past …

I don't mind losing the statue, I also don't mind if they leave it. But these men should be left undisturbed, and their presence acknowledged. Common decency.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP12 Aug 2023 1:00 p.m. PST

Well they are going to take down the statue anyway. Didn't see what they were going to do with it. I suppose many CSA statues have been warehoused or destroyed. Kind of like in 1984 …

Where will this "crusade" end ? What will be left of our history ? We need to know the ugly & very ugly too …

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP14 Aug 2023 8:48 a.m. PST

As a sidebar. An American Native group wants the Washington Commanders name to be returned to Redskins. This group has a lot of support from their fellow American Indians. They see the name Redskins as a term of honor. Elite warriors, nothing divisive about it. IMO e.g. like calling Infantrymen "Grunts" …

Again, the very vocal woke minority trying to rewrite history, pushing their divisive agenda, etc. They don't get the concepts of warriors and honor. Like many in the military do …

I strongly support the American Indians who want the Redskins name back. And it appears so do many of the Indians …
