Never played Republic to Empire, but have been using GdBde for years. During that time I've gone back to others or tried new rules (including Black Powder), and always fall back to GdBde. Mostly for all the point you made in your comparison. They eye spectacle with larger units is a plus also.

I think big units are spectacular but as I have't a big table it is a no go for me

I plan on 6mm armies going forward. The bigger battles on a smaller table seems more manageable. It cuts down on the larger playing surface and storage requirements.
