"The Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) was formed in the weeks immediately after Italy declared war on the Allies, and was tasked to provide long range reconnaissance of enemy activity in the North African desert. This was done by penetrating deep behind enemy lines by travelling through the southern, inner desert of Libya, which was considered virtually impassable for large units by the Italians, and was such a vast expanse of largely featureless terrain that it was impossible to adequately patrol anyway. The LRDG also became very useful at ferrying agents to and from enemy territory, extracting downed aircrew, and later on they also fulfilled an important role in transporting special forces such as the new SAS to raids behind Axis lines. The information they provided was immediately appreciated by the Allied command, and they were often credited with disclosing important information about enemy activity, although it was only well after the end of the war that the pivotal role that Ultra intercepts played in this was revealed…"

Interesting figs – not sure the LRDG did many crazed bayonet charges – and is the 2nd standing figure in the last row counting off for hide 'n seek?

Looks to me like he's maybe counting off targets he sees in his bi-nocks?

I can well imagine such figures--presumably with comparable Afrika Korps and Italians likely already available--making for some very neat games. I just wonder if there are any matching scale vehicles (trucks, Jeeps, Landrovers, etc) available.

And are there any bespoke SAS figures to go with these fellows? Would seem best if they did the heavy lifting during a raid.

A fitting set of quick action skirmish rules would seem practical, but I can't name one at the moment.

The "Crazed Bayonet" pose might be converted into a casualty figure rather easily, I should think.

Anyway, if I was younger, I think I'd try to develop all this myself!

Variety of hard plastic jeeps and trucks in 1/72 and 1/76 scales have been available for decades, and if you are willing to go for resin models then there is even more choice.

Land Rover to my knowledge is a post-WWII design, so not particularly relevant for these models (and less often seen as a scale model than jeeps).

Yes, the first Landrover was designed in 1947.

The LRDG mostly used Chevy 30cwt trucks.
