I am getting a bit worried. Western Govts and press make big play on sending a few MBTs and other weapons… but do not hear of ramping up Ammo production. Nothing will work if it can't shoot. We may need increased 'capacity'… just for replenishing own supplies. Ukraine can hold off Russ… but smaller manpower reserves… need to kill more Russ boys… so need ammo! |

To paraphrase from an article in Military.com. It is becoming obvious that the US is dolling out aid to give the Ukrainians just enough support to survive, but not enough to decisively eject Russian forces from Ukraine's land. The US leadership is afraid of what the Russians and Chinese might do. At least it appears that way. It is known/said real military superpowers do not operate this way. The US should be making the Russians and Chinese afraid of what the US might do. |

Legion 4 | 08 May 2023 7:55 a.m. PST |
The US and NATO knew if war broke out in Western Europe. They'd need equipment & training to breach the many streams and rivers in country. The Ukraine's terrain is very similar in that regard. Bottom line you most likely will have to cross bodies of water. Sooner or later. I know we trained for this type of ops. In the USA and overseas. When I was on active duty '79-'90. And even as ROTC Cadets we had rubber boat training, with the RB-15s, '75-'79. E.g. I know as a Mech Co. with previously deploying 3 times to the Canal Zone and grad from USMC/USN Basic Amph Training. When I was in the 101, '80-'83. My Mech Bn Cdr a few years later always sent my Mech Co. on dismounted river crossing ops, '87-'89. When needed during FTXs, etc. Plus, when in the ROK, '84-'85, my Mech Bn practiced river crossings by swimming our M113s across the Imjin River. Sadly, our sister Mech Bn lost an M113 as it sank crossing the Imjin. Losing 3 troops. May they RIP. The M113 was recovered with the troops' bodies inside, IIRC. |

Legion 4 | 14 May 2023 9:30 a.m. PST |
Western tech, capabilities, competence, motivation, etc. has resulted in the Ukraine being generally successful vs. the Russians. Plus, Russian incompetence from the top down is just embarrassing. Liked to the past performances of Mid-East and African forces. |

soledad | 14 May 2023 11:45 a.m. PST |
In a certain way I can respect high level commanders who go to the frontline, even if they are Russians. But it is not a good sign that they have to go there. there should be plenty of other ranks who should do it instead. In the end the result was good. Russians forced back in tatters, their (according to reports) very capable officer was killed. Commander Makarov was a dangerous and skilled opponent, capable in war fighting. This makes it a great success that he was demilitarized. |
Legion 4 | 14 May 2023 6:35 p.m. PST |
It seems because of the poor training, quality, etc. of Russian officers plus they have no real NCO Corps. The Russians higher ranks are as incompetent as the rest of their military. At the beginning of the war many senior Russian officers were killed by Snipers, etc. Some say getting intel from the US. |

Ukraine's counteroffensive is shrouded in confusion. That may be the plan link Armand |
ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa | 20 May 2023 6:17 a.m. PST |
If even close to correct Bakhmut is sucking in Russia's mobile reserves – and I've certainly heard it suggested that the Russian army has lost enough kit to have its mobility constrained. I suspect part of the Ukrainian unwillingness to abandon the city in the first place was that they knew it was becoming politically totemic for the Russian government out of all proportion to its true value. I'd tentatively suggest this is not a great situation to put yourself in when you know for certain your opponent has his own uncommitted reserves for the express purpose of offensive operations…. link |
Legion 4 | 20 May 2023 11:22 a.m. PST |
Ukraine's counteroffensive is shrouded in confusion. That may be the plan To paraphrase Sun Tzu – "All warfare is deception". As we saw at e.g. Normandy. Deception became confusion for the Nazis. Still awaiting an attack at Calias … even days after at the landings at Normandy. I suspect part of the Ukrainian unwillingness to abandon the city in the first place was that they knew it was becoming politically totemic for the Russian government out of all proportion to its true value. Yes, I agree. I also think it became the Ukriane's plan to inflict heavy losses on the Russians. Using Bakhmut as the killing ground. In prep for their oncoming offensive. Even with Russian's Reserves being uncommitted. The Ukraine generally has bested the Russians in almost all engagements. So I think this is a calculated risk. |

About the US trainers and the complaints I can agree to a certain extent. Although only "anecdotal evidence" I can attest to Ukrainians willing to learn but showing fear of personal initiative and fear of punishment if you "stepped out of the box". Also a fear of thinking for ourself. One example. In a situation where one man searches and the other secures, our instructions were that the secure man should chose a position where he could accomplish his mission. that is to make it safe for the search man to advance. Exactly where the "secure man" set up was not important as long as he could accomplish his mission- But the students wanted to know EXACTLY where to set up (eg "set up ten meters to the right and forward two meters, ALWAYS). They were so afraid of "doing wrong and getting punished" if they used initiative. But if they followed orders EXACTLY they would not be punished as the only did EXACTLY what they hade been ordered to do… Regardless if they did not accomplish their mission. It was not easy for them to accept the order "set up where you feel you can do your job to the best of your abilities". And that there were no 100% right or 100% wrong. And mind you, I feel US soldiers show a fear or initiative and follow orders too strictly… |

And mind you, I feel US soldiers show a fear or initiative and follow orders too strictly… At times that may be true today ? I don't know for sure ? We were expected to take the initiative, take advantage of and develop the situation, etc. E.g. I remember as a new 2LT in the 101. Our Bde Cdr who served in Vietnam, had us all go to the Operation Section briefing room. He discussed Rommel's book "Attacks" with us. As well as taking the initiative, etc., etc. A very worthwhile Officers' Professional Development class … |
