Did the line Zouaves (not the Guard) wear a turban or a fez in the Crimean War? So far, the information I've found would seem to indicate both. I'm wondering if one is the dress uniform and the other was worn in the field? If so, which one was which? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks. |

I have seen contemporary illustrations of both but also with them wearing the kepi or similar cap, which I believe was an acceptable alternative for camp/off duty wear. |

Roger Fenton's photographs of the Crimea show them wearing the fez. |

I've also seen photos them wearing the turban. Hence my confusion. |

I believe that the officers wore a kepi. |

In a related question, did Zouave battalions have drummers or buglers? |

Perhaps they wore the turban in winter and the fez in summer? |

i always saw the fez and turban as linked attire, the fez had the turban wrapped around it. the pictures with the turban seen to have something covering the crown of the head. again are not drummers also carrying a bugle I always thought they did as the drum is a cumbersome way of communication inbattle but the bugle is clearer and quicker. |

In a related question, did Zouave battalions have drummers or buglers? Pretty sure, buglers. They were considered legere. |
