Used Lt LaRoche and my FFL to playtest a new solitaire village sweep scenario at company level. Found here:

Sadly Webroot won't let me visit the page – no idea why not.

It's always an easy mission, until the lead starts flying! Nice table and setup. I like the 'time limit' mechanism to get the FFL moving.

Your pictures remind me of a guy I knew who was a USN crewman on a PBR. He said one morning he was in his skivvies and taking a leak off the stern of the vessel when it hit a mine and the explosion threw him into the water. He said he was in the jungle in his underwear for a couple of days before he found some friendlies. He said he was a "crispy critter" by then.

Nice looking table.

UFB, am sorry to hear that. You have had this problem before. Maybe your internet company?
Stry, agreed and thank you. Yes the time limit helps differentiate it from an attack the village scenario.
79, scary story! That would have been a terrifying experience.
Thanks

That does look interesting. Did you say what underlying rules you were using – sorry if I missed it – and are you doing 8 figs or thereabouts for each platoon?

There is something so tragic about the French involvement in Indochina.

They never stood a chance militarily. Dien Bien Phu and the various highway ambushes of relief columns showed that.

Their country was recovering from a ruinous WWII and had limited resources to fight such a campaign so far from home.

They were fighting to preserve a colonialist idea that had had its day. This was not like the US involvement, where I genuinely believe there was much idealism, at least amongst those who served.

They had little support back home (which might sound familiar) and large numbers were eventually imprisoned and very badly treated.

Tacitus you are welcome. Thanks for commenting.
Colkitto, I am using modified piquet cards for initiative and using the old battlefront rules for combat and morale. Battlefront has modern rules/ cards on their website. I explain the reason for piquet in my Jan post I referenced if you want to learn more. Than again you might be sorry you asked!
DH, very true. I think there was some idealism among the US troops initially but that soured over time.
Thanks all

Bernard Fall's introductory comments in "Street Without Joy" about the French losses in Indochina would raise more than a few eyebrows. According to Fall, French losses (on a percentage of population basis) were greater than many of the nations that fought in WW2.

Colkitto, you're welcome. Also yes I am using 2 figures per squad but the french at this time had 15 man squads. You could argue they are understrength but for fun the platoon gets a "free" smg squad as denoted by 2 us ww II figures hence 8 figures per french squad plus ldr. The VM 6. I would like to eventually have 3 figure squads.
B, Interesting. I wonder what percentage of french casualties were actually french? To keep outcry at home down I think they used the FFL and colonial troops a great deal. An option the US didn't have.
Thanks for the discussion

Joe
