Can anybody shed light on the unusual but distinct greenish khacki uniform color of Spain?

Is it a khaki color with a greenish tinge or is it a very light Olive color with a bit of khaki in it?

I assume that Vallejo paints has a specific color forit.

I'd recommend the Painting War volume that addresses the SCW: link

I've seen depictions of varying shades of green khaki for different belligerents in the SCW. I think one has a lot of leeway in whatever shade you opt for.

I opted to use Vallejo Russian Uniform for my SCW Italians. I used a bone white to mix in for highlights.

I second Vallejo Russian Uniform.

Thanks, I'm pretty good on Italian colors – got lots of resources.

The Spanish are another matter. Wondering if there's some reason for the color, also – local dye? Something else?

Hi Stalkey,

The volume recommended by Prince Alberts it's a really valuable source Rúben Torregrosa explains very well how to get the tones.
For the garments with a greener shade, Vallejo's Russian uniform it's a good base for mixes.

"Is it a khaki color with a greenish tinge or is it a very light Olive color with a bit of khaki in it"

Both options are valid. Some uniforms are more on the brown side others greener.

Spanish Legion wore a different hue of green – darker,greyish- closer to the Vallejo's German Uniform (not the feldgrau)

Republicans are usually shown in the illustrations and on the tabletop wearing a more brownish khaki. (variations on Vallejo's khaki grey , U.s Drab etc…)

As you probably know pieces of the 1926 uniforms were present in both sides but more prevalent in the Nationalist side.

BTW Stalkey,

"Beware" of Bueno's illustration on the CTV, it depicts a green grey color trying to match the "verde grigio" instead of yellowish green who was in fact wore in Spain.

Hi Stalkey,

Thanks a lot!! Those are the old and newer Peter Pig's 15mm. I've got the Minairons 20mm minis waiting years to be paint, maybe one day I will do comparison shots between Irregular, SHC, Minairons etc..

+1 Acronim, another valuable source and free, Hats off to Lluis from Minairons.

By any chance did you do a blog post with how you painted them up, somewhere? I'd like to see more…

But alas I didn't post any tutorial.

To keep it simple I just do the Republicans in khaki (VJ British uniform) and for the Nationalists I mix in a dollop of green to the khaki.

Obvs Tercio, Regulares, CTV etc are different.

MiG AMMO have Spanish Green Khaki MiG031 in their range, if that helps?
