I've started work on one Early Samurai army for DBA. Well Sohei actually, going all warrior monk, and adding hoods to other types for more pose variety and armour. It's also helpful that monks from later period ranges with naginata and bow work fine for earlier too.

Now considering a second army to go all Shaw Brothers for temples fighting each other. Pondering mixing in more ranges for more variety.

I'm happy mixing Essex and Peter Pig that I currently have.

Leaning towards Two Dragon for the cavalry component of a 2nd army. Photos I've seen show them mixing well with Essex and PP. Maybe using some of Viking Forge infantry, but the packs of 10 in one pose is a lot of sameness for small DBA armies. So will likely mix with PP foot at least.

Also considering Viking Forge. I really like the pose variety of their infantry. The figures they label as early Ashigaru will make lovely monks with a green putty hood wrapped around their heads. The height seems to be a good match with the other three manufacturers. But how stocky are they, and would they mix well?

Viking Forge photos look a bit stocky but I haven't come across any comparison photos.

Has anyone here used Viking Forge and any or all of Two Dragons, Peter Pig, and Essex and could advise please?

There's always Khurasan, but not sure how well they mix in:

The Khurasan look like their newer sculpts that are 18/20 and would not mix with 15. My theory is if their photos look tall, they are giants.

Really wish they would label the a actual heights now that they've stopped making consistent 15s.

I don't have any Khurasan Samurai (yet! They are on the list…), but I have some of their HYW figures. I also have various Essex ranges. IMHO they do not mix well.

Damon.

What one Khurasan range mixes with is little clue to what another does.

(A particular peeve of mine is that their Mongols are giants while their Song Chinese are dwarfs.)

Well, I put in an order for the Viking Forge. Once I can check them over in person, will decide on going with Two Dragons for the bulk of the cavalry, or what.

The 15mm Samurai range was/is pretty good. I used to cast/sell them. They were sculpted by Dave Higgs and are of 3rd generation Minifigs quality.
