Indeed! – The Cromwell was definitely not favoured over the Sherman. It was in many ways just one of the steps that lead to the Centurion, the first MBT.
Its only strengths over the Sherman were its speed (though in practice this was not a real advantage) and slightly better armour.

From Bashytubits link "On the firing trials at Lulworth it was found that only one tank of British manufacture was able to shoot without gun fitter attention, whereas all Shermans merely T and A'd their sights and drove up and fired all guns without a hitch".

I was once lectured by a WW2 squadron leader called John Semken on the subject of tanks. Pretty much word for word he said "A tank is not a hare nor a tortoise, neither your armour nor speed will keep you alive. A tank is a gun platform and you will stay alive by shooting your enemy first and keeping shooting until he is destroyed". John had proved his point by taking on a Tiger I frontally at short range and winning. Put these two things together and you can understand why the Sherman was preferred.
