Poor training, likely poor maintenance in peace (seems par for the course for Russia), and high sortie rates isn't a good combo. I have been underwhelmed by the Russian Air Force. Really makes me think that NATO would take air superiority quickly.

Speculation that this was a gliding bomb… that didn't glide.

Denys Davidov's video seems to think it was an accidental drop from an overflying aircraft.

smithsco21 Apr 2023 3:57 p.m. PST

Accidental drop makes a lot sense. I've read Russian nav systems aren't great in the aircraft. Flying over Belogrod would be a major landmark for navigation. Hit wrong button or have a faulty release and you drop the bomb.

It's Catch-22.

Ukraine has outsourced their strategic bombing campaign to the Russian Air Force.

These things DO happen. And given standards of CURRENT Russians? But… remember when B52s Disintegrated and NUKES landed on USA?
Probably not properly fitted… but wonder about 'Arming'? Thought that was cockpit controlled?

The Russians are never going to admit that Ukrainian special forces are just that good.

ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa22 Apr 2023 1:56 a.m. PST

I don't know if Russia Defence Ministries description of the incident suffered in translation but is probably deserving of a place in worlds all-time list of military euphemisms…

Video in the 3rd post by Special Kherson Cat.
There is a circa 19 second delay between the bomb landing and the explosion.

And now, they think they have found another one!

UXB. Unclear whether from same plane… one armed, one didn't…or maybe from WW2?

The incredible thing in the vid, is the drivers trying to get past impact site!

But… remember when B52s Disintegrated and NUKES landed on USA?
Yes, and there was another B-52 incident off the coast of Spain. And those Nukes were eventually recovered from the sea. All that being said, those were incidents decades ago. Tech at least US tech has evolved since then … Seems the Russians like everything else in their military has not …

I'm amazed they don't cover it up as an explosion of one of their dilapidated hot water pipes for central heating.
Being boiled alive in your own car in some hole in the street that opened up seconds ago, has been a popular pastime in that shithole of a country for decades.
I think the first time I heard about it was in the mid-90s.
Moscow Heating Pipes Create Lethal Traps – On L.A. Times 1998

Nothing changed.
Later on, those scumbags used it as a legit target, when they mug their neighbors for toilets et al.
Soviet-Era Centralized Heating Systems Were Ukraine's Secret Weapon for Cutting Emissions. Now They're a Vulnerability – On TIME

So more dead Russians by friendly fire?
Civilians this time?
Who cares, their whole life is a campaign of friendly fire against themselves.
They're used to it.

Yes, they should send the metals by Reaper Drones …

dapeters24 Apr 2023 9:06 a.m. PST

Interesting that the Russians admitted this almost right away.

Does anyone recognise bomb as Modern Munition? It looks later than WW2, but I do not know.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP24 Apr 2023 8:20 p.m. PST

It is Russian munitions after all … so it could be a left over …

Arjuna25 Apr 2023 4:45 a.m. PST

@Dragon Gunner

And you know what?
I actually LIKED that country and its people.
Despite its shortcomings.
And not because of some guilty conscience as a German.
They could have been so much more than what they became.
It may look like I'm hating them, but I am just utterly disappointed in them.
This Bleeped text will cost them and the world at least another fifty years.

Was watching one of the retired military experts on CNN.

He said the accident could be the result of the wings failing to deploy on a gliding bomb. (BOTH gliding bombs?)

But he also pointed out it was quite a coincidence that the bombs hit an intersection in a Russian city. Could it have been deliberate?

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP26 Apr 2023 6:00 p.m. PST

Nothing would surprise me when it comes to the Russian military …

Druzhina28 Apr 2023 1:23 p.m. PST

Does anyone recognise bomb as Modern Munition? It looks later than WW2, but I do not know.

It may have been a glide bomb – a dumb bomb with a guidance kit and wings strapped on. These tend to detach when the bomb impacts – see UMPK guided bomb, globalsecurity.
