Howdy,

Today's (4/15) game was a playtest for my Historicon game, "Southern Italy 1014." Played using the rules So Convenient for Hewing. Game is submitted for Thurs, 7pm at the Con.

Played using 25mm figures painted by Bob Bryant.

An attempted raid led by Meggargh the Fat is intercepted by Sir Lothart. The raid is turned back with great loss of life. Fun game, played at Saga Games in Frederick, Maryland. Select photos follow.

The raiders accumulate victory points as follows:

+1 VP for each unit exiting the far table edge.

-1 VP for each raiding unit which fails morale at some point during the game; -2 VP for each raiding unit which is routed.

Also, +1 VP for each defending unit which fails morale at some point during the game; +2 VP if a defending unit routs

Order of Battle, Raiders
Sir Meggargh, Senior Leader (at start)
1 unit, 8 stands, Veteran foot, armor & shield (at start)
2 units, each w/ 8 stands, foot w/shield
1 unit, 8 stands, Archers, light (at start)

Order of Battle, Defenders
Sir Lothart, Senior Leader
1 unit, 6 stands, Veteran mounted, armor & shield
1 unit, 6 stands, mounted, javelin & shield, light (at start)
2 units, each w/ 8 stands, foot, javelin & shield, light

Photo 1 – At start set-up.

Photo 2 – Sir Meggargh, and a unit of armored foot

Photo 3 – Archers as vanguard

Photo 4 – Light Cavalry, javelin w/shield

Photo 5 – Initial contact

Photo 6 – Raiders have crossed the bridge: the armored foot has routed the initial unit of javelinmen, while the defending light horse has driven back the initial advance of the archers.

Photo 7 – Meggargh's armored foot is isolated and sorely pressed. Meanwhile, the Light Cavalry has failed morale (green marker) and has been driven back. The archers have again crossed the bridge, supported by a unit of foot.

Photo 8 – Sir Lothart challenged Sir Meggargh to single combat only to turn tail when wounded. The flight of Sir Lothart effectively ended the fight. The raid was halted but at a high price.

The raiders had 4 stands, killed, while the defenders has suffered 11 stands killed or routed. The raid was aborted, the result to be greatly exaggerated in the telling of the glorious victory at arms.

Ponder on,

JAS

On fiddle sticks. Typo in the title, should be:

Southern Italy, 1014 …
