What did Russian drummer uniforms in the Great Northern War (around 1707-1712) look like? I have found a couple of images, but they rather differ from each other. Thanks and cheers, Peter |

During this period, the Russian army actually did not have a strictly regulated uniform. The color of the uniforms depended on the available imported cloth, and the decorations of the uniform for the musicians were actually at the discretion of the regiment commander. But there were general trends. The drummers had "porches" on their shoulders (cloth semicircles – I don't know the correct term in English), trimmed with woolen lace of any color (at the discretion of the commander). Button loops could also be decorated with galloon, but this is rare and mostly only in the regimental band.

I agree with this assessment. Usually the "porches" are referred to as "swallow's nests" in English. |
