I hadn't pulled my FPW figures out for a long, long time but the other day I was motivated to get them out and put them on the table. Here's a little AAR of the Battle of Spichern fought using Bruce Weigle's 1871 rules. After reviewing the pictures I really need to repair some of my bases… I really enjoyed the game and the 1871 rules make large scale FPW games very enjoyable. I'm hoping Bruce puts one on at Historicon this year so I can play! carnivalempire.wordpress.com/2023/04/07/spichern-a-franco-prussian-war-aar |

It seems like you prefer the 1871 rules to the 1870 rules set. Is that accurate, and if so may I ask why you prefer them? I usually refight Froeschwiller in 1870, but I may have to give Spicheren a try. |

Possibly because I have a bunch of things I haven't played with in quite a while, I like the idea of being inspired to pull out some of the old things and give them a go. Grelber |

The biggest changes in 1871 are: 1. Combat is much more straightforward. All bases are 1 point whether for fire or melee. The differences in weaponry or battalion size are handled in a modification to the die roll. 2. Results of fire are handled totally differently. Whether artillery or small arms you roll 2 dice. One to see if it is a hit and the second, if a hit, to determine the results. Similar to 1870 but the details are simpler and easier to run in a big game. 3. All commanders have the same command radius. Makes it easier to handle in large battles. 4. Big simplification in charge mechanics. 5. Number of artillery "ranges" reduced from 9 to 5 and weight of guns eliminated. All guns are treated the same which for this scale of game makes sense to me. This is just some of the changes but overall it plays much faster and is less finicky. |
