Obviously US infantry companies had drums, but did they take them into the field against the Indians? If not, did they use bugles or just voice to transmit orders in action?

Bugles. Drums may have been used on the March, but I doubt they went into battle against Indians with their drums. Bugles were used for sending calls in the field. I don't recall ever hearing that there were drums used in Crooks column on the Rosebud, and he had infantry.
