What the subject line says: how long before somebody uses AI to create miniatures on a 3D printer?

AI generated 2D art is pretty hit and miss as it is. Seems like AI generated sculpture could end up with some really strange results.

AI still struggles with hands 😁

Perhaps the AI could do the supports, and the plate leveling?

Maybe scan plan view drawings and interpret them into a 3D print?

Depending on what is meant by AI (large language models, text-to-image, image-to-STL) and miniature (Your toys? My toys?), but at least 6 to 12 months ago.
I myself have been tinkering with Blender, Python, GPT-4, and DreamFusion for a month to pass the time.
So, a lot of people really haven't realized how late to the party they are.
But don't worry, at the rate, this is going, we're all late.

AI still struggles with hands

So it should do like Linus and put them behind the back.

"AI still struggles with hands"

Which is why it has a preference for tentacles… ;-)

ChatGPT can create STL files, just not good ones.

The "AI" that are such a big deal right now are basically salad makers. They are trained on a huge number of images and documents and build a model of how things tend to fit together. Then they make something based on that model and your prompt. At the moment the number of STL files in the world is fairly small, compared to the amount of text or number of images that exist. So there is probably not enough material to sample to build a model of how STL or 3MF files work. Perhaps there are enough to make a bad model, but probably not a good model. EG if you asked it for an 1809 Prussian Hussar you might get something that is clearly human, but not necessarily even a soldier, much less something with the correct epaulets.

Also, where would the money come from for all the research?

It will probably still happen, and that will be fun, but it's not going to happen soon.

Remember these AI are not smart. They are just good at creating rearranging things they've seen. This can be very useful if you need something like that, but too many people think it's smart and that it can answer questions with super-human insight, and those people look very, very silly right now.

To take it a step or two further, eventually we'll be able to 3D print food, and even organs. Imagine the Frankenstein creations that an AI could produce. (There's gaming ideas in that right there… ;-)
