Thank you for the link. It reminded me of how fortunate I was to meet several WWII veterans while I was in my early 20's and to hear similar stories from them. I also once met a WWI veteran who had been a cook in a trench line kitchen. Only got to talk with him for 20 minutes or so, but it left quite an impression, especially as he talked about being buried once when a trench collapsed from an artillery barrage.

When my father was a young man he got to meet Confederate veterans and a former slave.

My great Uncle was a Spanish American war vet. That's as far back as my actual contacts went.
