How did the Assault , pioneers operate, were they attached by company or mainly stayed as a battalion? What was their role and how did they operate? The same for Germany MG battalions in the Afrika Korp ? |

I don't know about the assault engineers, but I think the first two AK infantry units were motorized MG battalions. I assume these were used as infantry until they got re-organized with some independent infantry battalions to form the three 2-battalion panzergrenadier regiments of 90th Light. |

The DAK MG battalions were equipped as MG battalions (ie SFMG mounts for their MG34s, mortars etc), but they were used as infantry so I guess they left the tripods on their trucks. In the 1941 scenarios in 'Benghazi Handicap', the 200th Engineer Bn is used as a complete unit. They are engineers so they did engineer stuff – creating and breaching obstacles, route improvement etc and they were used in the assault on Tobruk as assault engineers. |

Italian assault engineers: link The Germans had their organic engineer battalions in 12. and 21. PD, which just did what engineers do. They also had a road building battalion (85 I think) in the rear areas. A special unit was established to serve Division z.b.V. – Pionierbatallion zbv 900, which I think was based on the Pioneer School of the army. It only had two companies and was almost destroyed during CRUSADER. Obsolete Panzer I were allocated to the pioneers as armoured pioneer vehicles after the summer of 1941. All the best Andreas |
