A Good-Looking Army in a Reasonable Amount of Time

Painting a wargaming army is a completely different beast from painting a single miniature for display.

Beret with patch.

Black beret with United Nations Godzilla Countermeasures Center patch to be precise, and the whole UNGCC cosplay that I've worn while running kaiju games at Anime Boston.

Also a Saunder's University tankery cosplay for use while running Girls und Panzer games, but there's no hat with that.

I honestly want to wear hats during gaming but always feel like a dope when I try and take them off a few minutes in. I guess I don't game to role play as the commander, so the disconnect eventually just overrides the desire. That's a me problem, so not casting aspersions on anyone.

I have the following hats available, but never wear them while gaming.

Imperial Officer's Cap from Star Wars
Red 5 Helmet from Star Wars
My old Navy Dixie Cup (from when I was in the military)
A Soviet Sailor's Cap from the Cold War
A bowler hat (authentic from 1906)
A Black Cowboy Hat
A renaissance fop hat
A Sutton Hoo Helmet
A ton of baseball caps of various things.

I have a Juno Beach baseball hat and that is that – don't wear it except to go outside; I have my work hats from the Ministry of Justice but not the sort of thing you wear gaming

My tinfoil hat. And you'd wear one too if you realized what They are up to!

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP14 Mar 2023 11:15 a.m. PST

Well, I'm neither a Shriner nor the editor of MW, and I on occasion will indeed wear a hat for gaming, including some on the list.

But you're covered by three possible responses, so in fact I do know that some people don't wear hats and some people look down on those who do— it's a poll, so it covers the mugwumps, too.

That information is classified.

Although I will admit I am part of the Men Who Wear Hats Indoors Club when attending board game and miniature game conventions. (Years ago, a fellow gamer at a con came up with that moniker.)

I have a great helm that I made for myself. Well, I had a dead Alfa Romeo lying around that needed repurposing.

Don't wear it for gaming though – can't see ‘uck-all with it on…

I did once mock up a woodland camouflage canvas beret with a red side flash and a Soviet star with hammer and sickle, which I thought would help me get into a convention RPG game set in the late Soviet era. (I got into the game, but the GM didn't even notice the hat until about an hour into it!)

At conventions, I often wear a black wool beret with maroon trim and a steel sunburst pin that passes for the logo of the Third Imperium from Traveller.

I also have a blue ball cap with a USCSS Nostromo patch and scrambled eggs that I've worn to conventions.

That being said, though, I really don't have any hats that I consistently wear while gaming. I'm usually bare-headed at the table.

In my collection:

CSA artillery kepi
US Navy sailor cap
US Navy officer's peaked cap
Ancient Greek hoplite helmet repro
Medieval sallet repro
French voyageur knit cap
berets
Greek fisherman's caps
Gangster trilby, fedora, newsboy's flat cap
leather snap-brim cap (Dylan, Lennon)
"Zorro" gaucho hat
prisoner striped cap
Santa Claus cap
Valkyrie winged helmet

Gosh, and wonder what I'm forgetting?

No not a garrison cap but a combination cap that is worn by officers and CPOs. I wore them in High School and the Navy. I got out just before they went back to cracker jacks. I really liked the CPO-type uniforms also known as Zumwalt uniforms, that all enlisted men wore. I got out just in time.

14Bore16 Mar 2023 8:54 a.m. PST

a combination cap

I would have got that if you had said combination cap.

I got out just in time.

The only thing constant is change, except also that sailors like to gripe. The current NWU and SU go back toward what you liked. When they were introduced, tons of sailors were complaining about replacing dungarees. I hated getting rid of the Eisenhower jacket for about the same reason … the varsity jacket is just a generic piece of crap IMHO. But I realize its horses for courses.

The only one I seriously questioned (or cared) was blueberries. Blue digital camouflage that was apparently designed to hide you in the ocean if you fell overboard…

The only one I seriously questioned (or cared) was blueberries. Blue digital camouflage that was apparently designed to hide you in the ocean if you fell overboard…

Sorry to stray off topic (I don't wear a hat indoors is my answer to the question), but why do navies and air forces think high-visibility camouflage uniforms are necessary? They're expensive and look more than a little silly (hence nicknames like "Smurf Suit" are applied to upset the RAAF crowd). Is a fashion or esprit de corps idea? Wouldn't standard old work dress, whether they be overalls, dungarees, King Gees, etc, be more comfortable, cheaper and just as effective for doing your job?

(That goes for the armies, as well- save the expensive cam's for the bush and operations- you don't need AUSCAM to work in an office or stroll around the barracks).

Before anyone asks yes, I have served and retired.

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP19 Mar 2023 5:56 p.m. PST

Esprit de corps is the proffered reason ("solidarity with forward deployed troops" was the phrase I heard banted about). I never felt any additional solidarity or esprit or whatever. When I was forward deployed, I didn't really care what people were wearing in offices.

I saw it as the same idea of the USN getting rid of beards. Made up reason to hide bowing to peer pressure.

Personally, I'd go for coveralls except in dress uniform situations. Which I preferred to avoid …

Personal logo Dal Gavan Supporting Member of TMP19 Mar 2023 6:04 p.m. PST

That's fairly much the way I've been thinking, mate. Someone, somewhere, made a decision and then had to find a justification for it. What a waste of always-scarce funds. If it's about morale then get rid of the cams- except exercises, shoots or ops- and give people a pay rise with the money saved. That will boost morale more than wearing a noddy suit.

I agree. I much preferred work gear or even dress of the day to service dress or anything ceremonial.

14Bore21 Mar 2023 12:01 p.m. PST

Parzival If this doesn't work I will be mad at you. If it works, and certainly will put up a picture and will be happy you brought this up.

The Last Conformist21 Mar 2023 11:37 p.m. PST

I might have worn a baseball cap while gaming outdoors, but then for purely practical reasons.

I basically never wear headgear of any kind indoors, which is where 99%+ of my gaming happens.

I don't think I've worn an actual hat since I left the Scouts twenty years ago.

Personal logo Bashytubits Supporting Member of TMP23 Mar 2023 9:00 a.m. PST

I would have a hat but my head is so large I actually have to have a hat maker to get one and that costs too much for gaming. One size fits all is a lie!

Personal logo Murphy Sponsoring Member of TMP24 Mar 2023 11:04 a.m. PST

I've got my Fedora, and my ACW CS Forage Cap with 33rd VA Inf markings on it, and my CS Officers Gray Panama/Gamblers style hat.

I've got a lot more hats that I don't wear, and I have one that I wore that I WON"T wear to a game session.

They didn't stipulate how well it fits. Just that it fits.

You always get quality answers from me. Poor is a level of quality.

* Before you complain, just be glad I used "shirt" in the image search instead of "speedo".

-----

I basically never wear headgear of any kind indoors

I generally agree with this, depending on the prevailing social convention. That said, I consider wearing a "wargaming" hat for wargaming to be costuming, thus exempt from the general convention. Like when I was in the military, you didn't wear a cover indoors, except on Color Guard or Honor Guard.

14Bore26 Mar 2023 10:23 a.m. PST

Making a Prussian Napoleonic era shako, as close to a real one as I can get. It will be posted when done.

Maybe that shirt was made to fit like that, he should not be smiling though, it detracts from the shiny buttons that are about to rip off.
