Well apparently the guy who counted the contents of Russia's stockpile may have made a mistake…

If correct it would go along way explaining why T-62s are starting to appear.

They are running out of many of their AFVs … so that is no surprise!

After the first mnth or two, they realized that turbine engines in modern stuff sucks up fuel at rates that their logistic supporrt could not support.

So they started switching to older models of regular diesel tanks that were in stock.

They have now come to the conclusion that you really don't need the most up to date tanks to fight the war that they are conducting.

You would think with the Russian lack of warfighting ability they would use the best they have.

Interesting thought, though the only Russian tank I can think of with a turbine engine is the T-80 and I'm not sure that applies to all variants.

It certainly was in the 80s, when were saw the big Kamaz tanker trucks turn up in a barracks, we knew they were about to change to from T-64 or T-62 to T-80.

Tally Ho!

Many of the tanks in long term storage need a lot of refurbishment. Poor storage, corruption and theft have left some in bad condition. The tank factory doing this for T-72 also has to produce T-90 and repair damaged tanks – with a labour shortage. There is another tank factory that was refurbishing T-62s for Syria, so this is available to do the same for Russia itself.

There is a shortage of some components due to sanctions, so older model optics etc are being used for refurbishment.

It is about industrial capacity, not the fuel used or using older tanks by choice.

Seem to be running out of ballistic missiles and ASMs too, because they are using SAMs for surface bombardment now if the reports are to be believed.

In the olde days of the Cold War, Ukraine used to produce a lot of their armor and tank guns, IIRC.

partzan_oleg's estimate is probably off. He is not the one who counted tanks in storage from satellite images, that was Covert Cabal 16 Apr 2022 & Covert Cabal 1 Oct 2022 (youtube videos).
The countries that tanks were stationed in when the USSR broke up did not get that number of tanks WAJK, Mar 14, 2023.

As noted … If those AFVs were properly stored, maintained, etc. it may take some time to get them Fully Mission Capable[FMC]. Parts may be short, rubber seals dry up, trained mechanics availability, etc., etc. Once again Putin and his GENs Bleeped text up …

Seen pic of Russian'tank park'… but probably 'Scrap'. Tanks 'PILED' on others!

@Druzhina, thanks Covert Cabal rings a more definite bell.
All estimates will be off to some extent.

Military balance 2022 gives a total 9000 T-72s active and storage. Given those numbers even reactivating T-62 in a fire support role seems odd – they appear to have been used in that role since at least last Summer. The following article suggests it may a down to costs and a possible supply of vehicles being modified for Syria but now no longer destined for there.

I saw the same footage probably a decade of more ago. They were modern MBTs. Not WWII leftovers. Bett'n Vlad wishes he had all those MBTs now …
