I wonder if any troops in the Italian wars were using foliage such as oak leaves for a field sign. Perhaps on their pikes, or atop their hats/helmets?

None that I am aware of.

The only major battle I know of where there was a major danger of being mistaken was the night attack at Pavia, where the respective troops were ordered to wear their "white" shirt above the other clothes. Paintings of the event show few if any signs of this.

I had just heard this was done sometimes also in the later pike and shot period such as 30YW and ECW.
