‘Coulrophobia' is more common than a fear of heights, according to researchers from the University of South Wales. But at least now we know what causes it.

Fear or hatred? I think a lot of people really just don't like clowns. I don't know too many people who are genuinely afraid of clowns though.

John Wayne Gacy comes to mind.

Think there was a big switch in at least American society clowns went from lovable to evil, maybe 15 years ago?.
Always wondered why.
In my small town a old guy had a made up clown car, advertised for kid parties, saw him a lot driving doing his daily routine then seems to disappear quickly then. Maybe that's when I thought of this switch.

I don't see the desire of a person to be a clown so they are suspect. Throw in Gacy and all the people that want to be "evil clowns" and they become solidly in the "guessing there's something wrong with you, in a bad way" pile.

There are certainly 19th century references. The Joker, iconic baddie, appears in Batman in 1940. American societyin general, the evil clown really starts gaining steam in the 1980s

Difficult to answer a question when I don't believe the premise. And there is a serious difference between having some ideas on a subject and knowing causation.
