Huge water defences on two levels, a ballista, a trebuchet and a murderous gatehouse. My partner and I just spent an off-season week in South Wales. We visited several castles, an abbey and the battlefield of Mortimer's Cross.

Caerphilly is said to be the second largest castle site in Britain, second only to Windsor. The four stone trebuchet roundshot were recovered from the site during excavations. CADW, who look after the building, have also recreated part of the brattices or hoardings which once hung over the walls and allowed vertical defence of the base of the wall.

Another excellent tour of a fascinating site. Somehow we missed this great castle on our 1985 "Grand Tour." Your video has remedied this oversight. Many thanks!

A wonderful concentric castle built before the famous Edwardian concentric castles.

I have just put up 13 still photographs of Caerphilly on Flickr:

All photos are thumbnails and all open-up to a small caption story.

@ Shagnasty:
I have been wanting to visit here for about 45 years – I finally managed it thanks to my partners bright idea. We also went 90 metres down a coal mine!

@Dagwood:
Indeed. There is a brief mention in the commentary (very brief) but more in the Flickr caption story.

I have fired siege engines at Caerphilly in my colourful past :-)

@Riothamus:
They do have quite a collection, sadly I could not spend too long on them as the weather was quite variable.
