I'm thinking about collecting true 15mm for ACW after being underwhelmed by the offerings from Blue Moon (they seem too tall and skinny somehow). Anyway, I could do with some help in deciding which manufacturers to go for (I'm in the UK):

Old Glory 15s
Peter Pig
Essex Miniatures

Are these ranges compatible? Any others that would fit in?

Cheers

Friekorps 15 are true 15mm.

For me, true 15mm means Peter Pig! I love em, and they have a large range, as you probably know. OG 15s are larger than PP, but not as large as Blue Moon.

Essex is OK, some of their command figures are nice and fit well with PP.

I have all three and like all three a lot. I mix them in some brigades too, especially on the CSA side.

Generally, I prefer using Essex with a sprinkle of Peter Pig for the USA. Essex are pretty uniform, easy to paint, and a bit prosperous looking. PP are excellent for officers, musicians, standard bearers, and so forth. But a few OG chaps also appear, especially in the firing/reloading stands.

I prefer the sometimes more animated and at times 'energetic' poses of Old Glory for the CSA, with Essex and PP mixed in. Somehow, OG CSA troops seem closer to letting out the Rebel Yell than the more staid and uniform Essex sculpts. And perfectly apt to have a more varied set of greys and browns as uniform colours.

My arty, wagons, etc. are more mixed, with a few other manufacturers.

Proportionately, I would say my infantry are maybe 50% Essex. 40% OG, and 10% PP and other. But all good.

You may find this entry comparing popular ranges useful:

I compare the mentioned ranges specifically plus a few others.

I have figures from most makers mentioned in my own ACW forces, but my favorates are the AB figures (Anthony Barton) sold through Eureka and the Battle Honors figures that Barton sculpted that are available from OG15s. I do like the FreiKorps figures, although they are more flashy and harder to clean up these days than I care for. Peter Pig has good posing but the facial detail or lack thereof can be off putting if you look too close. Stone Mountain is still solid. Old Glory 15s has some great poses and some not so great. As my eyes get older and I get more nostalgic, I find I am enjoying painting 15mm ACW from Minifigs. The Blue Moon are tall (18mm) and lanky, but look good together and I have no problems putting down a regiment of Blue Moon next to a regiment of Stone Mtn for example. Wouldnt mix them though.

I'm leaning towards Peter Pig + Essex at the moment. I have Peter Pig WW2 figures and they have great character and are lovely to paint.

Thanks for considering the PP range

Do have a look at this page to see the massive PP range.

Please ignore any comparison photos such as those suggested above. I do keep reminding them that they are using are long (8 years) out of production figures from years ago. They just ignore it though. I even sent new figures to one of these so called "photo comparison" folk and they ignored it.

In addition one of the comparison figures used is the out of production "boy soldiers". Boy soldiers being smaller than man soldiers. That is why the figure looks smaller.

Not much I can do about it sadly.

thanks

Is it true that Musket Miniatures is no longer producing its ACW line in 15mm? If so, that's too bad for me. I liked them.

That looks like the case, Michael – they are no longer listed on their web site.

Received four packs of Union Infantry in Greatcoats from Essex today and they are lovely figures. Nice clean castings.

Looking forward to the packs from Peter Pig now – expected tomorrow.

Whoop! The minis from Peter Pig arrived today and they are perfect. The ones from Essex scale nicely with these, so I'm a very happy bunny. Will work on some basing schemes and then order a shed-load more!

Emailed Musket miniatures recently and they are now being sold through Noble Knight Games.
