Just recently got an updated copy of De Bellis Renationis, Version 2.0. Was looking through to see if there were any rule changes from my old dog eared copy of the original version. I was a bit confused as i always thought that DISTANT SHOOTING was more long range engagements i.e. shot, bow, artillery, and CLOSE COMBAT included skirmishing at close range with bows, javelins, and slings (shot too?) for light horse, skirmishers/psiloi, etc. Why are there ranges for skirmishers, and light horse, (which usually fight at close range) and which combat factors do I use for the different types of engagement, i.e. shooting, skirmishing, close combat?
Do my skimishers and light horse shoot as per the ranges noted, or do they need to close to close comat range?

DBR has always allowed Skirmishers (S) to shoot at a distance.
The change in version 2 is to add skirmishers (O).
Likewise LH(I) can shoot at a distance in DBR v1 and 2.
This is one of the areas where DBR blurred the clear distinctions in DBA/DBM.

Only those grades specified can shoot at a distance, all other grades are treated as shooting at base contact.

These troops are armed with superior weaponry as defined by the rules – see the appropriate troop definitions.

Cheers
David
