Hi I developed my first Traveller Character last night and He did very well. Apart from a couple of Legal issues. So with INT 12 and EDU 9 (failed to get into UNI) He managed a uninterrupted career in the Merchant Marine. Mustering out as a Captain at 46 with no age affects (!!). The question is. Do I really get 8 benefits plus 3 for being a Captain? 9? That seems a lot. (Plus a +1 on die for Captain) |

Yes but usually you are limited to only so many either money or items rolls. Can't remember which. Also may vary with which version of Traveller. There is Classic, Mega, New Era, a couple owned and developed by Mark Miller and a couple licensed and developed by Mongoose. Each has tweaks and I am no expert so check the book/pdf closely. Then roll away! |

Ha ha he passed every survivor roll by lots. Not my usual rolling for sure. |

The only Traveler character I ever rolled up was turning out to be a bad dude (active military, special ops, pilot, etc), until one of the last rolls where he passed away on some nameless planet. Never got to actually play the game. |

I found generating characters really to be a game unto itself. |

There are folks who play Traveller by generating characters and then writing up detailed backstories for them. It's a testament to the character creation system of such a simple game (Classic Traveller) that it provides entertainment all on its own. |

Although I still have my boxed Traveller rules set from 1979, as a GM I now use the Mongoose Traveller 2nd Edition rules. Character generation is not as lethal and calls for the players to generate characters together in a sort of pre-game before the actual adventure/campaign begins. During character generation, the players find links between their characters during their career terms based on events during the terms. They build a backstory about that shared experience and gain the other character as an ally/friend who already know each other. So far it has turned out that not every character knows all the others, but a character knows at least one or two and the characters have a link of some sort to all of them through the characters they do know. As the GM I give general background/location information on the adventure/campaign for them to use to come up with an explanation of how all of the characters had come together at one location to begin play. The process is a lot of fun, bonds the group well, and avoids the awkward first-meeting-in-a-starport bar trope. |
