Hmm…

I've been looking into chiasmus a lot (studying fight club at the moment, aaaaugh!).

For those who don't know chiasmus is basically the mirroring of a story from its centre.

Eg, Star Wars. The imperial ship defeats the rebel ship. Rebels fighting and dying, dath Vader swaning in triumphant. Then, at the end, the rebels defeat the Empire, rebels troops standing safe and triumphant, and dath Vader making an exit alone and defeated. And such things go to the centre of the story.

I'll use then and now to differentiate the past and future.

Then 2005 has RTD start the modern tat Dr Who. Then David Tennant comes in a year later.

Now, they are both back.

Then, 2005 just missed the 40th anniversary.

Now they are back for the 60th.

I'll add more as I think of them.

Basically I'm suggesting, by chiasmus, the modern tat should end in a few years, if not less. Yay!

The H Man21 Feb 2023 8:51 p.m. PST

Then RTD came in, a year later DT joined.

Now they are joining together.

Then there was a modern wite doctor before DT joined.

Now he is joining along with the new black doctor.

Then RTD and DT left seperatly.

Now they join together.

Then DT had a long run.

Now DT will only be there for a few episodes.

Another interesting bit is the mid point. I'll have to look it up for sure, but it looks to be about at the end of Matt Smith's run. So basically when they show went from good ratings to flop.

King Monkey21 Feb 2023 9:41 p.m. PST

Eh?

Zephyr121 Feb 2023 10:02 p.m. PST

What you will see: The BBC will 'cancel' the series, wait two years to flush away all the people currently involved, then 'reboot' with a new 'vision'…

The H Man22 Feb 2023 2:37 a.m. PST

"Eh?"

Trouble with the chiasmus writing structure concept, Dr Who, other?

Predator is another fav. Starts with the hunter, yet to kill, going down to a beautiful earth alone. Ends with Arny, the victorious prey, ascending from a warzone with others.

And, yes hopefully the modern tat will end. However they will need to wait long enough to flush out the issues from greater society in general. Unfortunately this could be a longer time.

The H Man22 Feb 2023 2:52 a.m. PST

With this I'm thinking 2013-2014 is about the mid point.

Then was Matt Smith's last season in 2013. Being the youngest? Doctor.

Now was Peter Capaldi first season in 2014. Being one of the oldest doctors.

Interestingly there were some specials between them also. Including 50th anniversary specials.

So this is based on a 2005-2023 over all. Probably my proposed end would be in a year or two to mirror the build up to the 2005 series, possibly as a flat dead end.

There is a chance I have my mid point off, of course, but things fit so far.

JMcCarroll22 Feb 2023 8:31 a.m. PST

Is or was there a "jump the shark moment" for Doctor Who?

The H Man22 Feb 2023 10:48 p.m. PST

That's an interesting question.

Are you suggesting that could be used as a possible mid point?

As far as the modern tat, I'd probably say the 2013-2014 point, as even as ridiculous it was, I feel it got worse with Capaldi, particularly the guitar nonsense.

Overall 2005 would be my shark for Doctor Who in general. For classic, Tom Baker.

The H Man23 Feb 2023 3:43 p.m. PST

Hmm…

If things went to pot when RTD started in 2005, then does that mean things will be fixed under RTD now???

How could things be fixed, a, under RTD (Mr late night SBS), and b, if the show should be ending to mirror the 2005 start???

Maybe the BBC will be the answer here. Somehow, RTD may fix the show, perhaps now seeing the damage he has done. Ratings may even go up. The BBC, however may be all "Your only putting Ds and Ws in our Dr Who alphabet soup. Your fired!" And they cancel the show.

For how much hype there was for the 2005 season, a quick kill sounds like good chiasmus.

The problems I have with this is that I just can't see RTD fixing the show, perhaps only from ultra modern tat back to modern tat levels.

I can't the BBC axing it if the ratings go up enough either.

Remember the BBC have obviously got him back to try and make lighting strike twice, hence DTs appearance. Good luck.

More likely the ratings of the DT episodes will do very well, but following eps will crash. Then the big kill no one even notices. That seems a better fit and sounds realistic.

The H Man24 Feb 2023 5:24 p.m. PST

The ABC broadcast the classic Series (AKA Doctor Who) from 2003. There was some overlap when the modern tat started from 2005.

Now, does that mean they will begin to broadcast it again now? It's hardly opposite, except in time, so not great chiasmus.

However, the Blu-ray season boxes have been coming out. I'm not sure where they are up to, as I'm sure you know my opinion of them.

So, the tv broadcast may flip to the Blu-ray releases?? Perhaps.

I think it more correct to assume another who related thing or event (60th??) Will begin soon and continue on past the end of the current show, as the ABC broadcast began well before with some overlap at the moment end.

So, that may this thing be? If not the Blu-ray home release, I have no idea. Warlord just lost its licence for a mini game, so perhaps a new one will appear soon from another company. Perhaps a new book or Comic series??

Speaking of Warlord, I wonder what the pre 2013-2014 flip of that was? Something that began around 2005 and ran for a few years?? Opposite of a miniature game? Maybe the action figures?

Plenty to look into.

The H Man25 Feb 2023 12:14 a.m. PST

Here's some more.

Then David Tennant had huge ratings.

Now unlucky 13 has low ratings (in more ways than 1, but is still Hot in Venus… moving on.)

So, I'd think:
Then Eccleston had lower ratings in 2005 than DT did later.

Now this next guy may have worse ratings then what's her face.

Another interesting one is:

Then Eccleston wore black.

Now the new doctor is black.

I think the new doctor's colour may well help them. Even though it's "the other one". It's so less extreme than ms sexy eating cup noodles "slurrp". Plus a black comedian did a good parody, as opposed to the good, but obviously what the, Joanna Lumley. As long as they avoid to many race related stories, that said it couldd be a good way to explore the past, but, I don't know. In space, at least, they can (will they?) just play it normal (yes, modern tat normal?????) and it should be fine.

PS Cotton is one of my favourite extras and Martha is …nice…for modern tat (cough, any tat, cough). This doctor idea just doesn't sound as weird as the last.

PPS Yes, Cotton, that a good point (says me), I don't remember his race being even brought up. If they just cruse like that most of the time, sweet. Then, like in The Wargames, make a big deal once in a while, use it to explore something interesting, great. Just not all the time. (Yeah, we have a hope!)

The H Man28 Feb 2023 5:39 p.m. PST

Then 2005 and everything Who was HOT!

Now Warlord can't even keep a mini line going.

I wonder how much Doctor Who is falling into Brand only territory re merchandise.

For example a t shirt with "Doctor Who" or the TARDIS on it rather than a particular doctor. I would expect more of that.

Gosh, RTD has an uphill battle on his hands to resurrect this wreck. Best of luck to him.

"Is or was there a "jump the shark moment" for Doctor Who?"
Peter Davidson

The H Man02 May 2023 1:17 a.m. PST

So whats that? Early 80s?

I could see that.

Twenty years prior the show began.

Twenty years later the new horror began.

Empty viod pre twenty years Vs the modern abomination post twenty years.

Coming out of the 70s hell of wiping production tapes, then, into the Marvel of home video.

The longest running classic doctor on one side with Tom Baker, and the shortest running(?) on the other with Colin Barker.

Ha. A Baker one side, a Baker the other! And they both have curly hair, don't they?

Good pick.

QUATERMASS03 May 2023 8:19 a.m. PST

Yes indeed the early 80's.
I remember Peter Davidson from another show called "All Creatures Great and Small"
It was about a country vet (veterinarian); It was the most bland and boring of shows imaginable yet even this magnolia/badge (if your posh) crap had a gapeing void at its center and that was peter Davidson!
Most bland and boring people suck the air out of a room Mr Davidson sucks the air out of a vacuum.

So when the best doctor ever Tom Backer (although john pertwee is my favorite) dies and regenerates into Peter bloody Davidson I remember probably for the first time shouting at the telly!

Colin backer wasn't to bad at all but the damage had been done, by the way he isn't the doctor with the shortlist run that dubious houner gos to Paul Mc Gann in the mid 90's with that terrible TV movie/pilot.

The H Man03 May 2023 8:28 p.m. PST

You may enjoy the recent remake of all creatures great and small, as he is not in it.

DO NOT WATCH THE RECENT REMAKE OF THE DARLING BUDS OF MAY!!!! The Larkins, in which Peter Davison is a regular.

Yes, the 8th is the shortest, but it wasn't part of the main bulk of the run, sort of a late tac on. But otherwise, yes.

Perhaps Pertwee is your favourite because he is the best? Other than Hartnell, being the original everything else is based on.

Tom Baker was just the most popular. Actually, sweeping in the modern muck, David Tennant may be most popular, at least at the time??? So you see how little popularity matters.
