…Mary, who never remarried after her husband's death, had received annual assurances from the Army that her plot was secure. A board outside the entrance listed her name on the grave site. A map, still on the Army's website, clearly shows two side-by-side plots listed as "Dowling."…

Sounds like the Army has offered a reasonable compromise and the widow has rejected it. If she was Native American she'd understand the value of government promises.

Hard to believe that the government could screw something up.

I think the army has made a reasonable offer.

Interesting story! It does seem a reasonable offer. But, W/O Dowling's demise…that came out of the <deep> blue <sea>!

A number of the military cemeteries are running out of space – Arlington years ago shifted their policies years ago about stacked burials of veterans and their spouses

The NYT reported a few years back about changing eligibility rules for existing veterans because Arlington National Cemetery is quickly running out of
available space. link

Double stacking is pretty standard these days it seems. Our "family plot" is three plots, each double stacked baskets. I imagine we could do a couple dozen cremations in each if we wanted

Just an aside. UK. Mother died last year. Discovered Parents grave had a 50yr lease… expired. Yes Ma 'could' go in with them… BUT NO INSCRIPTION on stone!!!
Paid couple of hundred £ to renew. I will end up there too… but will HAVE to be burnt in a box… (No room for more?)… 3 max 'burials'.
Worth considering, if you have 'Family' plot.

Ma did take out lease on next plot… 30yrs to run… but I Have transferred to 'Family'… know where she wanted, and I, want to go.
