I'm taking SWMBO to Budapest for her 60th. This is a big deal so I'm looking for the best hotel in the old part of the city.

Anyone here have any recent experiences to share?

My library is giving away eggs. So on Wednesday, I dropped by and got a half dozen.

The Intercontinental is nice, right on the river and close to the main street and metro.

Isn't Budapest full of drunken British stag and hen parties? Or have they moved on somewhere else?

Haven't been there in many moons, but, don't worry about the accommodations that much. There are so many classical, modern, and specialty museums, that you shouldn't spend much time in the hotel. Map your attractions of choice and find a reasonably priced (which should be reasonable comfort) museum right in the middle.

Also … food. Don't look for a hotel where you can get on your fine dining. Eat everywhere else. Even a bourgeois fine dining restaurant for a night on the town, if you want.

@Cerdic:

Well, that might be but we're committed.

We never eat in the hotel but we like a luxury place with amenities….the wife loves a spa and gym, the daughter loves a pool.

If you want a gym or a pool, walk to more attractions. Budapest is (still) hopping after dark. And not just bars. They have a great opera and ballet, and many of the museums have night hours (to compensate for low numbers of people in public spaces at one time), plus dozens of different night Danube cruises and … night trips to the big spas!
